Eagles’ Athletes and Coaches Earn USTFCCCA South/Southeast Region Honors

Emory University senior Alex Greenhouse, sophomore Lauren Attiah, head coach John Curtin and assistant coach Kevin Semanick were honored by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) based on their performances during the 2010 Indoor season.

Greenhouse was named the region’s men’s track athlete of the year.   Earlier in the season, he broke the Emory school record in the 200 meters with a time of 22.01, which also put him among the top ten competitors in Division III in 2010. Greenhouse also won the University Athletic Association (UAA) indoor title in the 400-meter dash, with a personal best time of 48.63 seconds.

Attiah, meanwhile, was named the South/Southeast region’s women’s field athlete of the year.  At the UAA Championships, she won the long jump and finished second in the triple jump to lead the Eagles to a second-place team finish. Her season-best and school record mark in the triple jump of 11.65 meters ranks her eleventh among declared competitors in the event at this weekend’s NCAA Division III Indoor Championships.

For the Emory coaching staff, Curtin and Semanick were named the women’s head and assistant coach of the year, respectively.  The Emory women finished second at the UAA Championships with five individual and relay conference titles and 12 All-UAA honors. The pair helped to coach national qualifiers for the high jump, triple jump and 55-meter hurdles.

The USTFCCCA honorees are selected by track and field coaches from across the nation.  The awards will be presented at a banquet Thursday evening at Greencastle, IN, site of the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships this weekend.

Attiah, along with senior Brittany Donino and freshman Theresa Ford, will compete at the national championship meet starting on Friday, the final indoor meet of the season for the Eagles.
