Emory Mens Track & Field in Second Place after Day 1 of the UAAs
The Emory University men's track and field team scored 35 points
during the first day of competition at the University Athletic
Association (UAA) Indoor Championships, finishing the day in second
place.
The Eagles currently trail only Washington University (Mo.) by one
point, and are ahead of third-place Carnegie Mellon University and
Case Western Reserve University by 15 points. The University
of Chicago and Brandeis University each scored 18 points for fifth
place, and New York University is rounding out the standings with
eight points.
Emory received a big boost on the first day from senior
Tommy Fyffe, who won the UAA Championship in the
5,000-meter run for the second-straight year, setting a UAA and
school record, in addition to a NCAA provisional mark, with a time
of 14:43.09. Senior Greg Decker also scored
a point in the event, with a sixth-place finish.
Other all-UAA honorees on the first day for Emory included
Nelson Nwannunu, who finished second in the long
jump with a distance of 6.77 meters, and the Eagles' distance
medley relay team of Stephen Ellwood,
Chike Brennen, Alex Robin and
Charles Meade, which finished third with a time of
10:11.31. Junior Brad Pruente scored with
fourth-place finishes in both the high jump and the long jump,
while Nwannunu also scored with a fifth-place finish in the high
jump.
After the preliminary rounds of the running events, qualifiers for
the finals for Emory included Nwannunu with a fifth-place finish in
the 55-meter dash, senior Tyler Faits with a
second-place finish in the 200-meter dash and a third-place finish
in the 400-meter dash, senior Alex Greenhouse with
a third-place finish in the 200-meter dash and a second-place
finish in the 400-meter dash, freshman Isaac
Chambers with a sixth-place finish in the 400-meter dash,
Robin with a second-place finish in the 800-meter run, and senior
Fritz Hain and junior Everett
Bryant with fourth- and sixth-place finishes respectively
in the 55-meter hurdles.
The Eagles will try for their second-consecutive UAA Indoor Track
and Field Championship tomorrow, starting at10:00 AM.
