Emory Women Finish Third, Men Fifth, at the Cardinal Opener
In their first meet of the season with team scoring, the Emory
University women’s track and field team finished third, while
the men finished sixth, at the North Central College Cardinal
Opener in Naperville, Ill.
The Emory women scored a total of 87 points during the meet,
finishing behind only the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh (163.5
points) and North Central (131 points). The men scored 26
points, as North Central won the men’s portion of the meet
with 174.5 points scored.
The Emory women were paced by junior Lauren
Attiah, who recorded a provisional qualifying distance in
the triple jump, reaching a mark of 11.41 meters and finishing
second overall. Attiah also finished second in the long jump
with a distance of 5.25 meters, and 26th in the shot put
with a throw of 7.93 meters.
Emory had two first-place finishes during the meet, one from junior
Tess Gallegos, who claimed the top-spot in the
3,000-meter run with a time of 10:29.55, and the other from its
distance medley relay team, which recorded a mark of
12:50.35. Juniors Alix Dyer and
Jasmine McCullough each had a pair of top-10
finishes as well for the Eagles, with Dyer claiming third in the
400-meter dash (59.94 seconds) and fourth in the 60-meter dash
(8.00 second finals, 7.99 seconds preliminaries), while McCullough
took second in the 60-meter hurdles (9.33 seconds) and eighth in
the 200-meter dash (27.64 seconds).
Other top finishers for the Emory women included freshman
Rasheika Martin in the shot put (14th
place, 10.10 meters), sophomore Theresa Ford in
the high jump (seventh place, 1.56 meters), junior Sara
Gelb in the mile run (eighth place, 5:33.61), and
sophomore Melanie Frank in the 800-meter run
(third place, 2:23.59). The Eagles’ also fielded the
second-place 4x400-meter relay team, which finished in a time of
4:05.24.
For the Emory men, sophomore Tony Lombardo matched
his school record in the pole vault (set last weekend), clearing a
height of 4.45 meters and finishing sixth overall. Junior
Ian Francis finished fourth in both horizontal
jump events, reaching distances of 13.96 meters in the triple jump
and 6.59 meters in the long jump. Senior Jason
Campbell added another fourth-place finish for Emory,
running a time of 1:58.21 in the 800-meter run.
Other scorers at the meet for Emory included sophomore Pat
Lanter in the long jump (sixth place, 6.32 meters), junior
Xavier Fowler in the triple jump (seventh place,
13.38 meters), and the Eagles’ 4x400-meter relay team (eighth
place, 3:28.43).
Meanwhile, junior Ben Euwer led all Eagles with
throws of 12.92 meters in the weight throw (19th place)
and 13.28 meters in the shot put (10th place).
Other top finishers for Emory at the Cardinal Opener included
freshman Scott Greathouse in the high jump
(11th place, 1.82 meters), senior Everett
Bryant in the 60-meter hurdles (third place, 8.62 seconds
in the preliminaries), freshman Nick Cortellessa
in the 400-meter dash (14th place, 54.00 seconds), and
sophomore Pat Lanter in both the 60-meter dash
(18th place, 7.43 seconds) and the 200-meter dash
(15th place, 23.72 seconds).
The Eagles will now turn their attention towards next Saturday,
January 29th, as Emory will head to Chapel Hill, N.C. to
run at the Carolina Classic, hosted by NCAA Division I and Atlantic
Coast Conference school, the University of North Carolina.
