Emory Cross Country Teams Shine At Sewanee Invitational

The Emory University men's and women’s cross country teams
turned in stellar performances at 30th annual Sewanee Invitational
today, with the women’s side registering a first-place finish
out of 10 teams while the men’s squad tied for the top spot
with Rhodes College in a nine-team field.
The women’s team, ranked 35th nationally, recorded
25 points to finish ahead of runner-up Rhodes College’s 33
points. Centre College checked in with 114 points while
Tennessee Tech (126 pts.) and host Sewanee (152 pts.) rounded out
the top five.
Junior Tess Gallegos sparked the women’s effort, topping the
104-runner field with a 6K time of 22:15. The Eagles boasted
three of the meet’s top four finishers with senior Natalie
Fenn (22:39) and junior Sara Gelb (22:57) crossing the finish line
in third and fourth place, respectively. Sophomore Melanie
Frank was the fourth Emory finisher, seventh overall, with a
showing of 23:13, while classmate Calley Edwards rounded out the
team’s scorers with her effort of 23:26 good for
10th place in the field.
“We really couldn’t have drawn up the women’s
race any better than it turned out,” said coach John
Curtin. The women ran as a team as well as it had in maybe
the last five years. Tess ran a brilliant race and was
amazing in the last 600 meters.”
The men’s side, owners of a 34th national ranking,
saw three of its entries post top-10 finishes in the 104-runner
field. Sophomore Stephen Ellwood keyed the Eagles, churning
out an 8K time of 27:15 that placed him sixth. Freshman Ishan
Dey made an impressive college debut with his mark of 27:24 good
for the No. 8 spot. Senior Kevin Lanza recorded a
10th-place performance as he clocked a 27:28.
Junior Geriant Davies (27:40) and another freshman, Hank Ashworth
(27:49), rounded out the club’s scorers en route to
12th and 17th place finishes.
“I was very, very pleased with the way the guys ran,”
Curtin stated. “It was a great display of team
running. Our top five came in real tight with just about 35
seconds between the first and fifth runners. We had a couple
outstanding freshman performances and that was great to
see.”
Emory returns to action next Saturday (Sept. 11) when it competes
at the Berry Invitational.
