The Emory men’s and women’s cross country teams continued the early portion of their seasons on Saturday by turning in outstanding performances at the Berry Invitational.

The women’s squad, ranked 24th nationally, claimed first place out of 13 teams registering 39 points, easily outdistancing runner-up Shorter who totaled 91 points.  Rounding out the top five were host Berry (100 pts.), Lee University (107 pts.) and Covenant College (154 pts.).   Emory dominated the field with seven of the top 13 overall finishers, led by freshman Tamara Surtees who crossed the finish line in fifth place overall out of 126 entries with a 5K time of 19:13.  Senior Sara Gelb posted an effort of 19:32, placing her eighth, while another freshman Shannon Palmer, turned in a ninth-place showing with a mark of 19:46.  Rounding out the team’s scorers were freshman Stephanie Crane (19:47.1, 10th place) and sophomore Emily Caesar (19:47.5).

The men’s side came through with a second-place performance out of 15 teams.  The Eagles chalked up 70 points and trailed only Shorter’s top mark of 40 points.  Bryan College was third (80 pts.) while Berry College (100 pts.) and Lee University (134 pts.) closed out the top five.   Keying Emory’s effort was a strong underclassmen showing which saw a pair of sophomores and freshmen account for four of the team’s five scoring positions.  Sophomore Hank Ashforth was the first Eagle to cross the finish line with an 8K time of 26:40, good for 13th place out of 133 contestants.  Sophomore Alex Fleischhacker turned in a time 26:47 that ranked 15th in the field.  Freshmen Ryan Callahan (26:55) and Patrick Crews (26:56) came in 17th and 18th, respectively, while senior Tim Halinski rounded out the team’s scorers with his time of 27:06 good for 22nd place.

The Emory teams have next weekend off before returning to action on Sept. 24 when they compete in the prestigious Griak Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota.
