Emory Softball Drops Extra-Inning Affair To Bridgewater -- Andersen Sets School Strikeout Record

A two-out single in the top of the 11th inning by Bridgewater's Hillary Rees scored pinch runner Kristen Combs and gave the Eagles a 2-1 win over Emory Saturday in NCAA Tournament action.  The loss was Emory's first at the Salisbury Regional and dropped its overall record to 32-11.  With the win, Bridgewater stays alive in the double-elimination tourney and boosts its mark to 36-10.

After seeing Bridgewater strike first in the top of the sixth, Emory bounced back to tie the game in the bottom of the frame when a ground out by Kelsey Floyd scored Kim Bandy. Emory had a chance to end the game in the 10th inning with senior Liz White on third base with two out, but it could not push across the go-ahead run. White accounted for three of the team's six hits while junior Caitlin Fitzgerald picked up a pair of safeties.

Emory senior pitcher Shanon Andersen was saddled with the loss though she pitched well, tossing eight innings of relief and allowing just one run and three hits while striking out 11.  In the process, she became the school's all-time leader in strikeouts and has 441 to her credit.  She entered the game tied with Kathy Gordon for the top spot on the school's all-time ladder with 430.

Emory, host Salisbury and Bridgewater all have one loss in and the schedule for tomorrow (Sunday) is as follows

Game 12: Emory vs. Salisbury, 12 pm
Game 13: Game 12 winner vs. Bridgewater, 2 pm
