The 2010 edition of the Emory softball team opened its season
Thursday afternoon with a split of a doubleheader against Alcorn
State. The Eagles captured the opener by a 2-1 margin before
the Braves came away with a 6-1 triumph in the nightcap.
Emory sophomore Bridget Holloway keyed the Eagles'
win, tossing a two-hit, complete-game gem in the first contest,
striking out four and walking just two. Emory picked up its
first run in the bottom half of the third inning when a
bases-loaded walk to sophomore Jessica Boni scored senior Jenna
Lamoreaux. The Eagles went up by a 2-0 margin in its half of
the fifth when a one-out single by Caitlin Fitzgerald scored senior
Cassie Walsh from second base. Alcorn State recorded its lone
run off of Holloway in the top half of the sixth when a two-out
three-bagger by Christine Garcia enabled Brittanee Crayton to
score.
In the second game, the Braves took advantage of a couple of
fielding miscues by the Eagles with just two of its six runs
earned. After falling behind by a 1-0 count in the first
frame, Emory knotted the contest in the third when sophomore
Jessica Thomas rocketed a double, one of her two hits in the game,
to center field that scored Nikki Perez. Alcorn State pushed a pair
of runs across in the top of the fifth and put more distance
between it and Emory by crossing the plate three more times in the
sixth.
Head coach Penny Siqueiros and her Eagles return to action this
Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 13-14) when it hosts the Emory
Invitational.
