Emory Softball Sweeps Doubleheader vs. Covenant College

The Emory softball team, playing its first home games in well over
a month, made a triumphant return to Cooper Field this afternoon as
it captured both games of a doubleheader against Covenant
College. The Eagles captured the first affair by a 4-1 count
before registering a 3-1 decision in the finale. The two
victories boost Emory’s overall record to 17-9.
Senior Catlin Fitzgerald sparked the Eagles in the opener, going
3-for-3 at the plate and knocking in all four runs. After
breaking a scoreless deadlock with a single in the third inning
that scored Cassie Walsh, Fitzgerald socked a bases-loaded clearing
double in the fourth frame to extend Emory’s lead to
4-0. Freshman pitcher Jamie Melson tossed six strong innings
in raising her record to 6-2, allowing one run and five hits while
striking out three. Sophomore Bridget Holloway came on in
relief in the seventh inning to earn the save.
Covenant jumped ahead in the third inning of the second game when
it pushed home its lone run. The Eagles tied things up in
their half of the fourth when a triple by sophomore Jessica Thomas
scored freshman Ellen Kocoloski who opened the frame with a
double. Emory went ahead for good in the fifth when freshman
Meaghan Schultz led off with a double. After Dana Goodenough
was inserted as a pinch runner, she advanced to third following a
sacrifice bunt by Walsh, and then scored when freshman Brittany
Boeshore singled. The Eagles added an insurance run in the
sixth that helped Holloway record her eighth win in 14 decisions,
as she hurled all seven innings and surrendered six hits while
fanning four.
Emory returns to action on Wednesday, Apr. 7, when it plays a
doubleheader at Agnes Scott.
