Emory Softball Posts Doubleheader Sweep Against Piedmont
The Emory softball team snapped a four-game losing streak in impressive fashion Wednesday afternoon as it topped Piedmont College in both games of a doubleheader at Cooper Field. The Eagles boosted their record to 21-13 following 4-0 and 6-1 victories over the Lions who saw their record slip to 20-8.
Sophomore pitcher Bridget Holloway turned in a pair of masterful performances on the day, earning complete-game wins in both contests. She allowed just one hit in the first game, that being an infield single in the fourth inning, and gave up just one walk while fanning one. In the finale, she was almost as imposing, surrendering five hits and striking out five while not issuing any walks. The only run the Lions generated all day came in the top of the seventh when Michelle Crandall homered. The two wins upped Holloway’s record to 11-8.
Senior Cassie Walsh went a combined 5-for-7 at the plate in the two games, scoring a pair of runs while registering one RBI. Walsh’s hit total enabled her to creep closer to the top spot on the school’s all-time chart. Walsh has 218 career safeties to her credit, just two shy of tying the current standard of 220 held by Lauren Dix (2000-03).
In the opener, the Eagles put three runs up in the third inning with the big blow being a two-run homer by sophomore left field Jessica Thomas, her sixth blast of the campaign and 12th of her career, good for a third-place tie on the school’s all-time ladder. Emory added another run the following frame when Walsh’s two-bagger scored Jen Haag.
The Eagles jumped on the Lions early in the second game, crossing the plate four times in the bottom of the first. A two-run double by sophomore Jessica Boni followed by another double by freshman Meaghan Schultz were the key hits in the inning. Emory tacked on two more in the sixth when pinch hitter Zara Louy and Haag came through with RBI singles.
Emory returns to action on Friday (Apr. 16) when it hosts LaGrange College in a doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m.
