Emory Softball Drops Kean In NCAA Regional Opener
Box
Emory junior pitcher Bridget Holloway tossed a complete-game
four hitter and freshman Megan Light and junior Jen Haag added home
runs in helping the No. 2-ranked Eagles to a 6-1 win over Kean
University in the opening game of the Salisbury Regional at the
NCAA Division III Championships. The win was Emory’s
14th straight and raised its overall record to 41-2-1
while the Cougars fell to 16-26.
Emory totaled 11 hits in the contest, its 24th outing
this season with 10 or more safeties, and saw junior Dana
Goodenough, Light and senior Nikki Perez each collect two
hits. Emory jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the
first when Goodenough stroked a one-out double to center field
followed by a two-run homer by Light, her ninth of the
campaign. It represented Light’s 60th and
61st RBIs of the year and was her 17th
multi-RBI performance of the year. Emory added to its
advantage the following inning when Haag registered her first and
team’s 35th round tripper of the season.
After Kean scored its lone run in the top of the fifth, Emory
answered with a run in its half of the frame when freshman center
fielder Lauren Gorodetsky delivered a two-out single that enabled
pinch runner Ally Kersthold to cross the plate. The Eagles
padded their lead in the bottom of the sixth when
Goodenough’s two-out single scored senior Brittany Boeshore
and sophomore Ellyn Kocoloski.
Holloway was superb in the circle, striking out five and not
issuing any walks in boosting her season record to 18-1. It
was her 11th complete game in 15 starts, and she has now
fanned 61 batters and walked just six in 113 innings of work.
Emory advances in the double elimination regional and will
play Christopher Newport (32-10) on Friday at 2:00
p.m.
