No. 2 Emory Softball Begins Six-Game Homestand With Wednesday Doubleheader vs. Piedmont
The Emory University softball embarks on what it hopes will be a
productive six-game homestand on Wednesday when it hosts No. 21
Piedmont College in doubleheader action. Action at the Emory
Softball Field begins at 2:30 p.m. The games against the
Lions will represent the Eagles’ first home contests since
Feb. 20. Following Wednesday’s encounter against the
Lions, Emory will battle No. 7-ranked DePauw on Thursday in a
doubleheader that is slated to get underway.
The Eagles of head coach Penny Siqueiros celebrated their No. 2
national ranking last Thursday with a pair of wins on the road
against Covenant College, boosting the team’s record to
24-0. Emory captured the opening contest, 9-2, before closing
out the evening with a 7-0 victory in the nightcap. Freshman
Megan Light keyed the sweep over the Scots, going
five-for-six at the plate with seven RBIs and four runs
scored. In the opening-game win, she collected four RBIs,
three coming on a bases-loaded clearing triple, and then went
3-for-3 with three ribbies in the finale. Light has played in all
24 games and paces the squad in hitting with a .522 average,
rapping out 35 safeties in 67 plate appearances. The team
leader in runs (27), hits (35), doubles (10) and RBIs (38), she
heads into the Piedmont twinbill with a 13-game hitting streak to
her credit and has driven in runs in nine of her last 10
games. Junior left fielder Jessica Thomas
checks in with a blistering .444 hitting mark (28-of-63) and tops
the club in homers (8) while standing second with 28 RBIs.
Thomas has hit safely in 12 of her last 13 contests. Junior
catcher Jessica Boni has been a consistent force
at the plate as well, hitting at a .396 clip (21-of-53) with three
homers and 22 RBIs. At the start of the week, Emory has
outscored the opposition by a 191-24 margin and has socked 25
homers to three for the opposition. The Eagles’ 25
round trippers already ties the school season record set by the
2009 club.
On the mound, Emory continues to receive exceptional performances
from the tandem of junior Bridget Holloway and
freshman Lena Brottman. Holloway stands 12-0
in the circle and has compiled an impressive ERA of 1.16. In
her last outing, she went the distance in whitewashing Covenant,
allowing just four hits while striking out eight. In 70
innings of action this year, she has fanned 47 opposing batters
while allowing just three walks. Brottman, the owner of an
11-0 slate, has recorded an excellent 0.82 ERA and has whiffed 57
batters in 66 innings worth of work.
Piedmont posts an overall record of 11-3 heading into a Tuesday
home doubleheader against DePauw. The Lions currently are on
a four-game win streak and are coming off 15-0 and 11-3 victories
against Spelman College on Sunday. Head coach Terry Martin,
now in his 13th year in calling the shots at Piedmont,
has a number of key vets back from last year’s club that won
the Great South Athletic Conference and advanced to the NCAA
Tournament including senior outfielder Raley White and senior
pitcher B.J. Cofer (5-2, 1.75 ERA).
DePauw heads into the doubleheader against Piedmont with an overall
record of 8-1 following a ten-inning, 1-0 triumph over LaGrange on
Monday (Mar. 21). Eighth-year head coach Bonnie Skrenta saw her
2010 club fashion a 40-9 won-lost ledger that included a
fifth-place finish at the NCAA Division III Championship.
