Emory Women's Basketball Tops Agnes Scott In Overtime
Emory senior Whitney Martin tied her career high with 19 points,
and junior Liz Brandt along with sophomore Becca Feldman each
totaled a career-best 16 points in helping the Emory women's
basketball team to an overtime win at Agnes Scott on
Saturday. The Eagles raised their record to 8-6 following a
68-64 decision over the Scotties who saw their record slip to
3-10.
Emory ended the contest shooting 42.9 percent from the field
(27-of-63) while ASC posted a 39.3 percent effort (24-of-61).
The Eagles hit 10-of-16 from the charity stripe while Agnes Scott
was successful on 12 -of-22 from the line. Each team grabbed
41 rebounds on the afternoon with Martin pacing the Emory effort in
that department with seven boards.
Emory trailed by five points on three occasions in the latter
stages of the game, the latest being a 55-50 deficit with 45
seconds left in the game. A three-pointer by freshman Lindsay
Beers cut the gap to two points with 38 ticks on the clock before a
layup Feldman with just two seconds left knotted the score and
forced the extra session.
In the overtime, Martin went to work, scoring the team's first six
points en route to finishing the extra stanza with nine points.
Emory hit five of its six field goal attempts in the
five-minute frame while the Scotties sank one-of-four.
Emory held a 23-20 edge at halftime with Brandt providing the team
11 points, hitting four-of-six from the floor and all three of her
free throw attempts. In the second half and overtime, Feldman
registered 14 points, hitting six-of-nine from the field including
two-of-three from beyond the arc.
Emory returns to action on Friday (Jan. 22) when it plays at New
York University in a 6:00 p.m. start.
