Emory Women's Basketball Notches First Win Of The Season

Emory junior Elizabeth Brandt and freshman Danielle Landry each
scored 11 points off the bench to pace four double-figure scorers
as the Eagles recorded their first win of the season, 74-59 against
Millsaps College in an opening round game of the Emory Tip-Off
Tournament.
Both Brandt and Landry sank four-of six from the floor and
spearheaded a strong effort by the Eagles' reserves that saw them
outscore the Millsaps bench by a 41-18 margin. Sophomore
Sally Peterson and senior Keenan Whitesides rounded out the squad's
double-digit scorers with 10 points apiece.
With both teams looking to get their offenses clicking, Emory went
into halftime with a 32-29 lead. The Eagles shot 36.0 percent
from the floor in the opening half while limiting the Majors to
27.3 percent.
The Eagles put some distance between themselves and Millsaps during
the opening minutes of the second half, sinking five of their first
six field goal opportunities en route to an 11-0 run that upped
their advantage to 43-29. Peterson scored five points during
that stretch while three other players chipped in baskets. A
three-pointer by Melissa Koike capped a 10-0 sprint and gave the
Eagles their biggest margin of the game at 54-35 with 12:32
remaining. The Majors did get to within eight points with
9:48 on the clock following a pair of foul shots by Ronda Webb but
could not get any closer than that.
Emory picked up its shooting effort in the second stanza, knocking
down 48.4 percent (15-of-31) of its field goal attempts while
Millsaps converted on just 21.9 percent. For the game, the
Eagles finished with a 42.9 percent showing (24-of-56) compared to
Millsaps' 24.6 percent (16-of-65).
With the victory, the Eagles, now 1-2 on the season, advance to the
championship game Saturday evening where it will meet meet Covenant
College. Covenant advanced to the finals after defeating
Agnes Scott, 70-56, in the other semifinal game.
The consolation game will tip at 6:00 p.m., with the the
championship outing to follow.
