Emory Women's Basketball Tops NYU
Emory senior Whitney Martin led three double-figure scorers with
a game-high 15 points as the Eagles posted a win over New York
University Friday evening. Emory snapped a six-game losing
streak and upped its overall record to 10-13, 3-9 in the University
Athletic Association following a 70-56 decision over the Violets
who slipped to 13-10, 5-7 in the league. Friday's game was
Senior Night at Emory with the program recognizing the
contributions of four-year veterans Keenan Whitesides, Mary Smith
and Whitney Martin.
Martin sank seven-of-11 from the floor en route to her
15th double-digit contest of the season. Senior
Keenan Whitesides and sophomore Becca Feldman each added 10 points
apiece. Martin, Whitesides and sophomore Melissa Koike all
tied for team honors with six rebounds.
Emory ended the game shooting 44.8 percent from the field
(26-of-58) while holding NYU to 37.3 percent (22-of-59).
While the Violets held a 42-35 edge on the glass, they turned the
ball over on 27 occasions which led to 21 Eagles' points.
Emory never trailed in the contest and held a 31-20 edge at
halftime. The Eagles led by a 14-13 count with 8:14
left in the opening stanza before closing out the half on a 17-7
run that was keyed by five points apiece by freshman Lauren
Ferguson, including a huge trey in the waning moments of the
period, and Koike.
The Eagles opened the second stanza in strong fashion with a 10-2
spurt that opened their bulge to 19 points, their first of two such
leads in the second half. A bucket by Martin made the score
47-28 with 14:28 remaining and the closest NYU would get from there
would be 13 points.
Emory returns to action on Sunday (Feb. 21) when it entertains
Brandeis University in a 2:00 p.m. tip.
