Emory Women's Basketball Drops Hard Fought Game At NYU

Box

The Emory women's basketball team battled back from a seven-point deficit
midway through the second half but saw its comeback fall short Friday evening as it dropped a bitter decision at New York University.  Emory saw its overall record slip to 8-7, 1-3 in the University Athletic Association following a 59-55 setback to the Violets who upped their overall ledger to 9-6 (1-3 UAA).

Both teams ended the evening shooting 33 percent from the floor with Emory converting 21-of-64 from the floor while NYU hit 18-of-54.  The big difference came at the foul line where the Eagles could muster only eight makes in 18 tries while the NYU knocked down 18-of-24.

Leading the Emory scoring attack was sophomore Becca Feldman who finished as the team's lone double-figure scorer with 10 points.  Juniors Courtney Von Stein and Liz Brandt each picked up eight points.  Senior Whitney Martin pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.

Emory faced a 46-39 obstacle with 9:42 left in the game before posting a 6-0 burst to draw to within one point with 6:14 on the clock.  Following a bucket by NYU's Chrissy Kilmurray, Emory got back to within one point with 4:52 left after Martin made one of two charity tosses.  A three-pointer by Chelsea Blake pushed NYU's cushion to four points but a Feldman trey cut the gap to 51-50.  A pair of free throws by Grace Carmen, her 10th and 11th points of the half, put Emory in a five-point hole but it stayed within striking distance and when Von Stein nailed one from beyond the arc with seven seconds left, the visitors were back to within a single digit of tying.  Emory fouled on the ensuing inbounds, sending Blake to the foul line.  After she sank her first opportunity, she missed the second, but  NYU got the rebound and scored ending Emory's comeback attempt.

Both teams enjoyed significant runs during the opening 20 minutes of action that saw NYU hold a 33-30 advantage at halftime.  Emory led 22-18 with 8:56 left following a basket by freshman Danielle Landry.  The Violets then responded with a 9-0 spurt that pushed them ahead by a 27-22 count with 3:47 on the clock.  The Eagles were paced in scoring in the opening stanza by Brandt, who scored all eight of her points in the stanza, while Chrissy Kilmurray totaled nine points and nine rebounds to spearhead NYU.

Emory returns to action on Sunday (Jan. 24) when it plays at Brandeis University in a 2:00 p.m.  start.
