Emory Women's Basketball Upends Rochester
Emory senior Whitney Martin scored a career-high 19 points and the Eagles turned in their best defensive effort of the campaign in registering a win over the University of Rochester in the University Athletic Association opener for both teams. Emory improved to 3-4 on the season following a 60-50 win over the Yellowjackets who slipped to 4-2.
Martin sank six-of-10 from the floor and six free throws en route to notching her fourth straight and sixth double-figure scoring effort of the season. Martin also paced all players with nine rebounds. Sophomore Becca Feldman was the other Emory player to finish in double digits with 12 points.
Emory ended the game shooting 36.7 percent from the floor while limiting the Yellowjackets to 31.6 percent (18-of-57). While Rochester enjoyed a hefty 45-31 advantage on the glass, Emory's relentless defense forced 27 opponent turnovers which it turned into 17 points.
Rochester held a 14-8 lead with 9:14 left in the opening stanza but scored only four points the rest of the frame as Emory regrouped to claim a 25-18 advantage at halftime. Emory was the beneficiary of 19 Rochester turnovers in the opening 20 minutes of play as its defensive effort held the visitors to just 25.0 percent from the field.
The Eagles took its biggest lead of the afternoon with 16:23 left in the contest when a three-point field goal by Martin pushed Emory ahead by a 30-20 margin. The Yellowjackets drew to within five points with 12:03 on the clock, but a 7-1 Emory spurt, keyed by a pair of buckets by senior Keenan Whitesides and triple by Feldman boosted the Eagles cushion to 11 points with 9:26 left. Rochester battled back 46-43 with 3:55 remaining following a Jodie Luther layup, but Emory iced the game with a decisive 10-1 explosion, that started with a three-pointer by sophomore Melinh Rozen, giving the home squad a 56-44 bulge with less than a minute remaining. Rozen turned in a strong effort off the bench with nine points and one assist in 19 minutes.
Emory returns to action on Tuesday, Dec. 8, when it plays at Spelman.
