Emory Women's Basketball Drops Road Game At Sewanee

Box

Emory senior Keenan Whitesides scored a career-high 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds but it wasn't enough as the Eagles dropped a road decision to the University of the South.  South raised its record to 2-3 following a 97-87 win over the Eagles who slipped to 2-4.

Whitesides scored 16 of her 22 points during the second half of play and ended the evening hitting 11-of-15 from the floor en route to her fifth double-figure scoring performance of the season.  Sophomore Becca Feldman totaled a personal-best 15 points, converting five-of-11 from the field including four-of-eight from three-point range.  Rounding out the team's double-figure scorers were senior Whitney Martin (12 pts.), freshman Danielle Landry (11 pts.) and sophomore Sally Peterson (10 pts.).

Emory concluded the game shooting 46.6 percent (34-of-73) while the host Tigers hit on 43.1 percent (31-of-72).  The Eagles enjoyed a 47-42 advantage on the glass but suffered 26 turnovers while South had 16 miscues.

Trailing by a 41-40 margin at halftime, the Eagles opened the second half on a 13-6 run, keyed by five points by Feldman and four by Whitesides to take a 53-47 lead with 16:05 left.  Emory still held a 65-63 margin with 10:37 on the clock following a bucket by Liz Brandt but a 9-0 sprint by the Tigers put Emory in a 72-65 hole.  The Eagles stayed within striking distance and moved to within one point, 82-81, with 3:16 remaining when Whitesides culminated a streak of scoring six straight Emory points.  South countered with a triple from Lauren Gulley to go ahead by four points and another trey by Juliene Joyner with 1:46 left gave South a 90-85 edge.  Dani Kabbes led the Tigers with 18 points.

Emory fell behind by a 10-2 margin early in the first half, but regrouped to take its first lead of the game at 18-17 with 12:49 left following a basketball by freshman Linsday Beers.  A three-pointer by sophomore Becca Feldman, one of three that she knocked down in the opening stanza, pushed the Eagles to a 24-21 edge with 9:40 on the clock.  The Tigers rattled off the game's next five points to take a two-point edge, but Emory responded with a 14-6 burst, keyed by four points from Landry and another triple by Feldman, to take its biggest lead of the half, 38-32, with 2:47 left.  However, the Tigers scored nine of the next 11 points to take a 41-40 into the intermission.  Emory outshot the host Tigers (43.2 percent vs.34.1 percent) and held a 28-19 edge in rebounding.  The Eagles were hampered by 18 turnovers in the first while Sewanee had just eight.  Feldman totaled nine first half points while Landry chipped in seven.

Emory returns to action on Saturday (Dec. 5) when it opens University Athletic Association action with a home game against Rochester.
