Emory Women's Basketball Drops Road Contest At Birmingham Southern

Box

Emory University junior Melissa Koike chalked up a career-high 18 points but it wasn’t enough as the Eagles dropped a road decision to Birmingham Southern on Sunday.  The Eagles saw their overall record fall to 2-3 after losing to the Panthers by an 85-60 margin.  With the win, BSC upped its overall slate to 3-1.

Koike came off the bench and hit all seven of her field goal attempts, including a pair of three-point opportunities en route to her second double-figure scoring performance of the season.  She also tied freshman guard Savannah Morgan and sophomore forward Danielle Landry for team honors with five rebounds. Morgan finished the game with eight points and dished out a pair of assists while registering three steals.

Birmingham Southern shot 50 percent for the game (31-of-62) while holding the Eagles to 38.1 percent (24-of-63).  The Panthers also recorded a decisive 45-28 advantage in rebounding.

Emory fell victim to cold shooting during the opening stanza, hitting 28.1 percent from the floor in falling behind by a 35-20 margin at halftime.  After a bucket by sophomore Brooke Thyng put the Eagles down by just a pair, 18-16, with 8:46 left in the first half, BSC responded with a 15-0 run that saw it claim a 33-16 advantage with 3:27 left in the half.

Emory picked up its offensive pace in the second half, connecting on 48.4 percent (15-of-31) from the floor.  However, the host Panthers found their shooting eye as well, knocking down 57.1 percent of their field goal attempts over the final 20 minutes of play.  The closest the Eagles got in the final half was 10 points on a pair of occasions.

The Eagles return to action on Tuesday (Nov. 30) when it entertains the University of the South in a 6:00 p.m. start.
