Emory Women's Basketball Topped By NYU
Emory sophomore Misha Jackson scored a season-high 21 points but
it wasn’t enough as the Eagles came out on the short end of a
road game to New York University on Sunday. Emory saw its
overall record slip to 8-10 overall, 1-6 in the University Athletic
Association following a 75-60 setback to the Violets who upped
their overall slate to 10-8, 4-3 in the league.
Jackson hit a season-best nine-of-14 field goal tries and
three-of-four foul shots en route to her sixth double-figure
scoring game of the year. Also registering double digits in
the scoring column were junior Emily Hyncik with 12 points and
freshman Hannah Lilly with 10 points.
Both teams shot 39 percent from the floor with Emory hitting
23-of-59 of its attempts compared to NYU’s 25-of-64.
The Violets enjoyed an edge at the charity stripe, sinking 19-of-20
while the Eagles connected on 11-of-19. NYU turned in a 45-36
margin in rebounding with sophomore Danielle Landry pacing
Emory’s effort in that department with eight boards.
Emory lead for all but 35 seconds in the opening half, shooting
46.9 percent from the field while limiting NYU to 29.4
percent. The Violets were able to stay in the game by
knocking down 17-of-18 from the foul line and turning nine Emory
turnovers into 11 points. The Eagles held an 18-16 advantage
with 10:55 left in first half before going on a 11-4 spurt, with
Jackson, junior Emily Hyncik and freshman Savannah Morgan all
scoring three points apiece, over the next 4:16 to take a 29-20
lead with 6:39 left in the half. After a bucket by Jackson gave the
visitors from Atlanta a 33-28 edge, NYU answered with a 12-5 run
over the final 3:23 of the stanza to claim a 40-38 lead going into
halftime. Hyncik topped Emory’s first-half scoring
attack by scoring all 12 of her points, hitting four-of-six from
the field including three three-point field goals.
NYU began to pull away from Emory during the early stages of the
second half, scoring 14 of the stanza’s first 16 points to
seize a 54-40 bulge with 13:40 on the clock. Emory fought back with
an 8-0 run of its own to climb back to within six points with 10:09
left but the Violets answered Emory’s surge and built a
14-point wall with 4:12 left.
Emory returns to action on Friday (Feb. 4) when it hosts Brandeis
University in a 6:00 p.m. start.
