Emory Women's Basketball Opens 2010-11 Season

GAME FACTS – The Emory University women’s basketball team will open the program’s 23rd season of intercollegiate play on Tuesday (Nov. 16) when it plays host to Oglethorpe University.  Action at the Woodruff PE Center will get underway at 6:00 p.m.  The Emory vs. Oglethorpe game will be webcast. THE COACHES – Emory Head Coach Christy Thomaskutty (Tulane, ’96) begins her eighth season at the helm of the program.  She assumed her current duties prior to the start of the 2003-04 campaign. 

Ron Sattele begins his seventh year as head coach at Oglethorpe.  Sattele is no stranger to success, compiling an impressive 115-61 won-lost slate. During the 2007-08 season, he guided the program to the NCAA Final.  The following campaign he saw the Stormy Petrels to a won-lost mark 27-4 won-lost mark that a spot in the Round of 16 in the NCAA Tourney.

2009-10 RECORDS – Emory concluded the 2009-10 campaign with a 10-15 record.  The Eagles return six letterwinners from a year ago including senior Courtney Von Stein, who started 19 contests, and junior Melissa Koike, who drew 10 starting nods.

Oglethorpe, playing a with a dozen new performers, wound up last year with a 10-16 won-lost slate.  The Stormy Petrels welcome back eight players from last season including five performers who started 13 or more games.

SERIES RECORDS – Emory holds a 25-7 edge in the all-time series with Oglethorpe, though the Stormy Petrels have won four of the past five meetings.  Last year, Oglethorpe recorded an 86-73 win at home over Emory.  The Eagles have emerged victorious in 15 of 17 contests against Oglethorpe in games contested at the Woodruff PE Center.

EMORY AND SEASON/HOME OPENERS – Tuesday’s game against Oglethorpe will mark the sixth straight season that the Eagles have opened their season at the Woodruff PE Center.  Emory saw a four-year win streak of home-opening wins come to an end last year when LaGrange topped the Eagles, 66-53.  Heading into Tuesday’s affair, Emory claims a 14-8 record in season openers (5-2 under Thomaskutty). In home openers, The Eagles stand 17-5 (5-2 under Thomaskutty).

 EMORY TRIO TO SERVE AS CAPTAINS – Coach Thomaskutty has announced that senior Courtney Von Stein (Trafalgar, IN) and junior Melissa Koike (San Francisco, CA) will serve as captains for the 2010-11 season.  In addition, Melinh Rozen (Chevy Chase, MD) who saw her year come to a premature end following  a knee injury, will also serve as a captain.  Rozen will stay involved with the squad as she serves as a student coach.

NOTES – Heading into the 2010-10 campaign, Von Stein owns the most playing experience with 58 games under her belt during her three-year career … Next up on that list is Koike with 46 games and junior Becca Feldman (North Potomac, MD) with 42 contests … The Eagles are 13-2 during Thomaskutty’s tenure as head coach when scoring 80 or more points … Emory has an overall record of 13-6 in its last 19 November games … The Eagles have a total of 10 new faces on this year’s 16-player roster … Included among the newcomers are a pair of transfers, sophomore Misha Jackson (Atlanta), who played at Division II member Florida Southern College in 2009-10, and junior Emily Hyncik (Skillman, NJ), a two-year player (2008-09 & 2009-10) at Sacred Heart University (CT).
