Emory Women's Basketball Speeds By Spelman

The Emory women’s basketball team captured its third
straight game Tuesday evening as it defeated Spelman College,
77-27. The win over the Jaguars upped the Eagles’
overall record to 5-3 while the Jaguars fell to 1-4.
Senior Courtney Von Stein led a balanced Emory scoring attack with
10 points, hitting four-of-eight from the field, including
two-of-four from three-point range. All 15 players who saw
court time found their way into the scoring column with freshman
Hannah Lilly adding nine points and Katie Dickerson and Emily
Hyncik each chipping in seven points. Sophomore Danielle Landry
made her presence felt on the boards, picking off a career-high 15
boards and tying the school’s 13th-highest game
total in the process.
Though Emory shot 36.1 percent from the floor in the game, it did
manage to connect on 35.7 percent (10-of-28) from beyond the arc
with seven different players picking up a triple. The Eagles
enjoyed a wide a 62-42 margin on the glass over the outmanned
Spelman squad, who dressed only seven players, including a 29-16
showing on the offensive end. For the game, Spelman was held
to 14.0 percent from the field (8-of-57). Emory recorded 17 steals
off 31 Spelman turnovers which led to a 27-7 advantage in the
points-off-turnovers category.
Emory held a 17-10 lead with 7:29 left in the first half before
closing out the stanza with a 21-8 run that gave it a 36-18 lead
heading into halftime. Both Von Stein and Dickerson scored
all their points during the opening 20 minutes of action.
The Eagles ran away with the contest in the early stages of the
second half, bolting to a 50-20 advantage with 14:09 left on the
clock before extending it to 50 points, 70-20, with 8:13 left.
A check at the record book shows that the 27 points surrendered to
Spelman tied the third-lowest Emory opponent total behind the 18
points scored by Hilbert (Jan. 5, 1995) and 21 by Oakwood (Mar. 1,
1997).
Emory now will break for final exams and the holidays before
returning to action on Dec. 31 when it hosts Agnes Scott.
