Emory Women’s Basketball Handed First Loss of the Season by St. Benedict
The Emory University women’s basketball team suffered its
first loss of the 2010-11 campaign on Saturday, losing 71-53 to the
College of Saint Benedict in the championship game of the Emory
Tip-Off Tournament.
Just a day removed from setting program records for points
and field goal percentage in a game, the Eagles got off to a slow
start, hitting just five of their first 23 shots from the field to
fall into a 23-11 deficit. However, starting at the 6:32
mark, Emory got steals from Savannah Morgan and
Shantel Houston on back-to-back possessions,
leading to easy baskets for Crystal Goodwin and
Taylor Bruzzio. That would key the start to
a 17-3 Emory run on an eight-for-11 shooting bulge, including 10
points from Bruzzio, to put Emory on top 28-26 at the end of the
half.
Bruzzio finished the first half with 14 of the Eagles’ 28
points on a seven-for-12 shooting performance from the field during
the half, along with three rebounds.
The Eagles would build their lead to seven after a Hannah
Lilly three at the 18:17 mark, but St. Benedict would
battle back taking the tying the game on a layup by Heather
Gillund, who was fouled on the play, and taking the lead on the
ensuing free throw, 44-43 with 11:20 left. The lead change
was part of an 11-0 run for the Blazers, as the Eagles went
scoreless for a stretch of just under four minutes.
Emory would not hit a field goal for a period of 12:03 during the
second half, falling behind by as many as 18 points. That
stretch would finally be broken up by a Misha
Jackson put-back with 1:33 left in the half, but it would
be too little too late for the Eagles.
Bruzzio would finish the game with a team-high 16 points, while
Jackson’s seven rebounds led all Emory players. For the
Blazers, Amy Stifter collected 21 points, while Morgan Dale led the
squad with eight boards.
With the loss, Emory dropped to 2-1 on the season, while St.
Benedict improved to 3-0 with the victory.
The Eagles will return to action on Tuesday, November
23rd, traveling to LaGrange College for a 6:00 PM
meeting with the Panthers.
