Emory Women's Basketball Falls To No. 6-Ranked Washington University
Sophomores Misha Jackson and Danielle Landry combined for
33 points as 12 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough as the Emory
women’s basketball team dropped a hard-fought decision to No.
6-ranked Washington University on Friday evening. The Bears
raised their over record to 18-3, 9-1 in the University Athletic
Association, following a 74-60 triumph over Emory who slipped to
9-12 overall, 2-8 in the league.
Jackson paced the Eagles’ scoring attack with a season-high
tying 21 points, sinking a season-best 10-of-14 from the
floor. Jackson also finished with four blocked shots and four
rebounds. Landry chipped in 12 points and topped the squad
with eight rebounds, the fourth straight outing that she had led
the team in that department.
Washington U. shot 50 percent (30-of-60) from the floor compared to
Emory’s effort of 45.6 percent (26-of-57). The Bears
held a 40-24 bulge on the boards including a 14-6 advantage on the
offensive end that helped them to a 15-7 edge in second-chance
points. Senior Kathryn Berger led all players with 32 points
and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Annie Sayers rounded out the
visitor’s double-figure scorers with 12 points.
Emory played the highly ranked Bears on even terms over the opening
11 minutes of the game and enjoyed a 23-20 lead with 8:50 left in
the first half following a basket by junior Becca Feldman. However,
WU caught fire and hit five of its next six shots, including a pair
of triples by Berger, in rattling off a 13-0 run that put it ahead
by a 33-23 count with 5:49 left in the stanza. Emory would
get as close as eight points before the Bears went into halftime
with a 43-31 edge.
A bucket by Berger with 15:13 left in the game pushed the WU
lead to 51-36, but Emory battled back with an 11-0 charge,
the last two points coming by Jackson, that cut the deficit to just
four points, 51-47, with 12:33 on the clock. The Bears then
regained control of the game with an 11-2 spurt that put them up by
13 points, 62-49, with 7:12 left. From there, the closest
Emory would get would be 10 points.
Emory returns to action on Sunday (Feb. 13) when it hosts No.
10-ranked Chicago at 2:00 p.m. The game vs. the Maroons
will be the annual “Think Pink” game with the Emory
athletic department aiding in the cause to fight breast cancer.
