Rising junior Gabi Whitmer writes about the team's trip to Italy -- posting some thoughts last evening while in New York as the team waited to board for its flight to Paris.
After months of stressful planning and fundraising, a week and a half of long practices, and hours of frantic packing, we are finally on our way to Italy. Maybe it is the fact that we still have a layover in Paris, but it has not sunk in that we are embarking on a once in a lifetime trip.
We are a fairly eclectic group of 18, composed of 12 players, our new athletic trainer Jake, coach T, coach Menendez, and coach Jess. We are also accompanied by our fearless leaders and fan club, Meg and Angie. The group stuck out as we paraded through JFK in our bright gold Emory basketball t-shirts. We drew a lot of looks, as senior forward Danielle Landry pointed out, even though we were still in America. But we are now sitting patiently at our gate, waiting to board our second flight of the day.
Let's be honest, it is a minor miracle that we have made it this far without any problems (aside from a few luggage struggles on the coaches' part). We are only hoping that we can continue this streak of success through Paris and then Rome.
I have been given the daunting task of relaying our Italian adventures to the rest of the world. Daunting only because our team has a lot of character, and it can be difficult to keep up with all of us. Wish us luck as we embark on our Italian tour. Considering Danielle is the only person who knows Italian, we will certainly need it.
