Emory Women's Basketball Picked For Fifth In UAA Preseason Poll
In a poll of the league's coaches, the 2011-12 Emory women's
basketball team has been picked to finish fifth in the University
Athletic Association.
Chicago, the defending league champ, was picked as the team to
beat, picking up seven of eight first-place votes. Washington
University, a D-III national championship finalist last year,
picked up the other first-place ballot was tabbed to finish
runner-up. Rounding out the preseason rankings are Rochester,
Case Western, Emory, Brandeis, New York University and Carnegie
Mellon.
Head Coach Christy Thomaskutty embarks upon her ninth campaign at
the helm of the Eagles’ program by welcoming back a total of
12 letterwinners, including four starters, from last year’s
team that finished with an overall record of 14-11, including a
4-10 effort in the league that tied for sixth.
Among those returning is sophomore guard Hannah
Lilly, 5-foot-8, a Second Team All-UAA choice and league
Rookie of the Year. Lilly started 22 of 25 games last season
and tossed in a team-high 11.6 points per contest, good for
12th place on the league ladder. Also
bolstering a strong backcourt will be sophomore Savannah
Morgan, the team leader with a 4.2 assists-per-game
average last season, and seniors Becca Feldman
(6.5 ppg) and Melissa Koike (5.7 ppg).
The junior tandem of Misha Jackson and
Danielle Landry will anchor the frontline with both
players coming off solid seasons. The 5-foot-11 Jackson
started 21 of 25 games last year and captured Second Team All-UAA
honors after ranking second on the squad in scoring (10.6 ppg)
while finishing second on the team and fourth in the league
in rebounding (6.7 rpg). The 6-foot Landry
snagged a team-high 7.3 boards per contest, third among UAA cagers,
and totaled six double-figure performances in that category.
Emory opens its season on Nov. 15 when it plays at Oglethorpe
University in a 6:00 p.m. tip.
