Emory Women's Soccer Eliminated from the NCAA Tournament with 1-0 Loss to Lynchburg
Emory University's run in the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer
Tournament ended on Sunday, as the Eagles suffered a 1-0 loss to
third-ranked Lynchburg College (Va.).
The loss marks the second-consecutive year that Lynchburg has
taken advantage of a home match to eliminate the Eagles from
National Title contention. Last season, the Hornets defeated
the Eagles 2-1 in two overtime periods during the NCAA's round of
16.
After a scoreless first half, Lynchburg's Katie Santos scored the
eventual game-winning goal, after Betsy Kwiatowski beat the Emory
defender to the end line, and subsequently fed Santos for the
score.
Emory finished the match holding a 14-11 advantage in shots, and a
7-3 advantage in shots on goal. However, the Eagles were
unable to take advantage of the opportunities throughout the
match.Emory will end its 2008 season with a 16-4-1 overall record,
while Lynchburg remained undefeated, improving to 21-0-3. The
Hornets will advance to the round of 16, where they will face
Ithaca College.
