Emory Defense Leads the Way in 2-1 Win at Case
The Emory University women's soccer team turned in another
strong defensive performance on Sunday, leading to a 2-1 Eagles'
win over Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH.
The Emory backline allowed just six shots to the Spartans, three in
each half. Out of the six shots, only one was on goal.
Offensively, Emory got a pair of timely performances from players
coming off the bench. After the Eagles fell behind 1-0 in the
14th minute, freshman Hailey Morris
came off the bench to even the match in the 32nd
minute. Morris scored from two yards out, after a header from
junior Lauren Smith found her feet. It was
the second goal of the season for Morris, and Smith's first
assist.
It would not take the Eagles long into the second half to take the
lead for good, as Smith scored her first goal of the campaign,
heading in a Talia Dweck free kick from 40 yards
out.
The assist was the team-best 10th of the season for
Dweck, who is now one shy of matching the Emory single-season
assist record with three games left to play.
The Emory defense would preserve the lead, allowing just three
shots, none on goal, the rest of the match.
The win gives the Eagles their first UAA victory of the season, as
the squad improved to 1-3-2 in UAA contests, and to 5-5-5
overall. The victory also put an end to Emory's six-match
winless streak. Case fell to 9-6-2 overall, and to 3-3-0 in the
conference.
Emory will return to action on Tuesday, as the Eagles will travel
to Oglethorpe University for a make-up of a rain out at 3:00 PM.
