Four Eagles Earn UAA Women’s Soccer Athlete of the Week Honors

After winning a pair of NCAA Tournament games last weekend, Emory University women’s soccer team members Meghan McMahon, Ashley Kaiser, Lauren Drosick and Lauren Gorodetsky were all named University Athletic Association (UAA) Athletes of the Week.

McMahon scored the ‘golden goal’ during the seventh-ranked Eagles’ 1-0 double-overtime victory over 19th-ranked Lynchburg College in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Championships.  McMahon broke a scoreless tie in the 104th minute, scoring off a shot from outside the box after a cross from Lauren Drosick.  The goal was the first of the season for the midfielder, and the team’s fifth ‘golden goal’ of the year, a program record.

Meanwhile, the Eagles’ starting backfield of Kaiser, Drosick and Gorodetsky allowed just eight shots, including just four on goal, during the two wins.  Facing the fifth-ranked Division III offense in Lynchburg, the trio held the Hornets to their season-lows with just four shots, including two on goal, during a 1-0 double-overtime win.  Drosick also assisted on the ‘golden goal’ to win the game.  The previous day, Kaiser, Gorodetsky and Drosick also allowed just four shots, two on target, to Maryville College, in the Eagles’ 2-0 first round victory.  It was the first time in the program’s history that the Eagles have recorded multiple shutouts during one NCAA Tournament run.  This season, the three have helped Emory record 10 shutouts, while holding opponents to three shots on goal or less in 11 of 20 games this season.

Seventh-ranked Emory, the only remaining University Athletic Association (UAA) team in the NCAA Championships, will play Wheaton College (Ill.) in the third round of the tournament.
