Rubin’s Penalty Kick Lifts #17 Emory in 3-1 Win at Maryville

A penalty kick goal for senior defender Emily Rubin provided the game winner for 17th-ranked Emory University on Sunday, as the Eagles came from behind to defeat Maryville College 3-1 in Maryville, TN.

Despite falling behind on a goal by Maryville's Ashley Howarth early in the first half, Emory would strike off a set-play late in the frame.  After a yellow card was issued to a Maryville player with 2:51 remaining in the first half, Rubin took a direct kick for Emory, but instead of putting a shot on goal, she passed laterally to Clare Mullins who took a shot on goal.  The shot was saved by the Scots' goalkeeper, but Kelly Costopoulos was there for a follow-up shot, collecting the rebound and putting it into the back of the net to tie the game at a goal apiece.

It was the first career goal for the freshman Costopoulos.  Mullins and Rubin were credited with assists on the play.

The game would remain tied for most of the second half as well, before the Eagles got an opportunity for a penalty kick, after Veronica Romero was fouled inside the penalty box.  Rubin took the ensuing penalty shot for Emory, and converted it to give Emory a 2-1 lead on her second goal of the season.   Both of Rubin's goals this season have been game winners on penalty kicks.

Freshman Lauren Gorodetsky would secure the victory late in the match, scoring on a long shot for her second goal of the season.  Mullins picked up her second assist of the game on the score.

Emory's Kaele Leonard earned the victory in goal after entering the match in the second half.  The sophomore improved to 6-0-1 on the season, while lowering her goals-against average to 0.21.

With the win, Emory improved to 8-0-1, while Maryville dropped to 2-5-1 with the loss.  The victory was the fourth straight for the Eagles.

Emory will now turn its attention to the always competitive University Athletic Association (UAA).  The Eagles will kick off their conference schedule against the reigning NCAA Division III runners-up and four-time running UAA Champions Washington University (Mo.), next Sunday in St. Louis.
