17th-Ranked Eagles Record Second-Straight Shutout with 2-0 Win over Rhodes
The Emory University women’s soccer team, ranked
17th in the Nation, capitalized off another strong
defensive effort, en route to a 2-0 win over Rhodes College.
Emory continued its defensive dominance as of late, recording its
second-consecutive shutout and holding the Lynx to just two shots
on goal and five total shots. It was the third time in seven
games this season that the Emory defense has allowed two or less
shots on goal in a contest. The team’s goals-against
average dropped 0.53 after the shutout, the squad’s third
this season.
Emory got on the board in the first half, as senior defender
Emily Rubin scored her first goal of the season
off a penalty kick at the 18:17 mark. The penalty kick was
set up by a yellow card issued to the Rhodes goalkeeper, Stephanie
Sermonet, on a scoring chance by the Eagles.
The game would remain 1-0 throughout the rest of the first half,
and for a good portion of the second half, before Emory added on a
goal in the 83rd minute to secure the victory.
After a shot from freshman Veronica Romero was
blocked by a Rhodes defender, senior Sara Belsole
scooped up the rebound and passed to junior Liz
Harlan, who beat the keeper to the ball and found the back
of the net for her first goal of the season. It was the
second assist of the season for Belsole, and the first career
assist for Romero.
Goalkeeper Kaele Leonard earned her fourth victory
of the season, improving to 4-0-1 on the campaign. She
lowered her season goals-against average to 0.26, and made two
saves en route to her first career complete-game shutout.
The Eagles improved to 6-0-1 on the season with the victory, while
Rhodes dropped to 2-4-0 for the campaign. Emory will be back
in action on Wednesday night, wrapping up its three-game home stand
with an 8:00 PM matchup against Agnes Scott College.
