Emory University Eagles
The Eagles opened their 2010 campaign with a 2-1, double-overtime win over Lee University (the back-to-back NAIA champions) on Wednesday.  The game-winning ‘golden goal’ was scored by Emory senior Lauren Smith with just one-minute and 10 seconds left in the match.  Sophomore Kaele Leonard earned the victory in goal with 45 minutes of shutout soccer, appearing in her first collegiate match.  The Eagles are led by head coach Sue Patberg, who is 63-19-12 during her five-plus seasons with Emory.

Roanoke College Maroons
After going 12-7-0 in 2009, the Maroons opened their 2010 season with a 1-1 tie against Milligan College on Wednesday.  In that contest, McKenzie Garst scored a goal late in regulation for Roanoke to force the tie, while the Maroons outshot Milligan 23-5 during the match.  The Maroons are led bt head coach Phil Benne, who has a record of 240-138-28 during his 24 seasons with the squad.

Lynchburg College
Fresh off an appearance in the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament last season, the Hornets will open their 2010 campaign on Saturday against Shenandoah University at the Roanoke Invitational.  Lynchburg finished the 2009 season with an overall record of 17-3-5.  The Hornets are led by 17th-year head coach Todd Olsen, who has recorded a 247-74-32 record at Lynchburg’s helm.

Matchup Histories
Emory has a 4-0-0 all time record against Roanoke College.  The last meeting between the two teams was September 2, 2005, resulting in a 2-0 Emory win.  This will be the first time that Emory will face Roanoke on the road.

The Eagles have a bit more experience against Lynchburg College, going 3-5-3 in their previous 11 meetings with the Hornets.  The last meeting between the two squads was a NCAA Tournament match on November 16th, 2008, resulting in a 1-0 Lynchburg victory.

Emory Notes
Smith’s ‘golden goal’ on Wednesday was not only the first of her career, but also the first ‘golden goal’ by an Eagle in a season-opening game… With the win, Emory improved 19-4-2 all-time in season-opening games, and to 21-2-2 in home openers… Lauren Gorodetsky became the first Emory freshman to score a goal in a season opener since Jillian Brady did so in 2005… Emory is 101-27-15 in September games since 1993, and 19-2-5 in September since 2007… The Eagles have not lost in 30 of their last 31 games at the Woodruff Physical Education Center.
