Emory Women's Soccer Routs Birmingham-Southern, 5-0

The Emory University Women's Soccer team showcased their offensive prowess Sunday afternoon, scoring a season-high five goals in a 5-0 drubbing over Birmingham-Southern College at the Woodruff PE Center.

Five different Eagles recorded goals on the afternoon while the Eagles outshot the Panthers 33-1 and 17-1 in shots on goal. Senior Melinda Altamore, junior Abbe McCarter and sophomore Shivani Beall led the Emory offense, each scoring one goal and collecting one assist to finish with three points apiece.

Beall opened the scoring in the 34th minute as she one-timed the feed from freshman Anne Otterbein at the penalty spot, beating the BSC goalkeeper to lower left corner of the net.

Altamore made it 2-0 four minutes later with her first goal of the season. Beall played a ball across into the center of the box where Altamore put it on net. Her shot looked like it was going wide but ricocheted off the post and in.

The Eagles pulled away with a scoring onslaught to begin the second half, scoring just 1:37 minutes into play, the first of three goals over a 6:14 minute span.

Freshman Samantha Hilsee netted the first goal of her collegiate career in impressive fashion in the 47th minute. Hilsee squeezed past two defenders and beat a third before firing a shot past a diving Blakely Jones to make it 3-0.

Junior Danielle Darius tallied the fourth Emory goal in the 52nd minute as she stole the ball and got off strike from just outside the top of the box, beating Jones to the far left corner.

McCarter rounded out the Eagles, scoring 82 seconds later. Altamore provided a great through ball to a streaking McCarter inside the 18 before McCarter beat Jones one-on-one for her second goal of the year.

The Eagles will look to keep the momentum going as they travel to Sewanee University for a non-conference matchup Wednesday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM eastern time.
