Eagles Combine for Six First-Place Finishes and 12 Qualifying Times at UNC Wilmington
The Emory University men's and women's swimming and diving teams
combined to finish first in six events, and the women recorded 12
NCAA ‘B' cut times, during a pair of losses to UNC
Wilmington, and a women's win over the University of Houston.
The Emory men dropped to 1-1 on the season following a 170.5 -
122.5 loss to the Seahawks, the team's second-straight NCAA
Division I opponent. The women fell to UNC Wilmington 164 -
131, but defeated the Division I University of Houston 152 - 141,
moving to 2-1 on the season.
Emory's men's team excelled in the longer freestyle events at the
meet, as sophomore Paul Weinstein won the
1000-yard freestyle (9:46.36), senior Tom DiMarco
won the 200-yard freestyle (1:44.96), and junior Mark
Bernstein won the 500-yard freestyle (4:44.48).
Freshman Peter O'Brien also finished in first
place with a win in the 400-yard individual medley (4:12.68).
The Emory women had just two first-place finishers - junior
Liz Horvat in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:23.35)
and senior Ruth Westby in the 50-yard freestyle
(24.31).
However, the Eagles also recorded 10 ‘B' cut times in
individual events, and one in each of the relays. Westby (50
free, 100 free), junior April Whitley (100 breast,
200 breast), and senior Lillian Ciardelli (200
free, 100 fly) all had multiple qualifying times during the meet,
while sophomore Anne Culpepper (200 back), Horvat
(500 free), junior Amy Minowitz (500 free) and
freshman Theresa Gallagher (400 IM) recorded
‘B' cut times as well.
Emory will return to dual-meet action on Wednesday, November
4th, as the Eagles will face the NCAA Division I
power-house University of Georgia, at 5:00 PM in Athens, GA.
