Four Emory Swimmers Earn UAA Honors

Four members of the Emory University swimming and diving team were named the UAA Athletes of the Week, as sophomore swimmer Leslie Hackler and freshman diver Sarah Greene earned the women’s honors, while sophomore swimmer Peter O’Brien and junior diver Daniel Kolb earned the men’s honors.

The awards were given based on the four athletes’ performances during the Eagles’ season-opening meet against UNC Wilmington on Saturday.

Hackler recorded three NCAA ‘B’ cut performances, and two first-place finishes during Saturday’s meet.  Hackler finished first in both the 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard butterfly, swimming NCAA ‘B’ cut times of 57.20 seconds in the former and 2:06.89 in the latter.  She also swam the butterfly leg of the Eagles’ 200-yard medley relay team, which finished second and recorded a provisional qualifying time of 1:47.02.

Competing in her first collegiate meet, Greene finished first in the one-meter dive with a score of 234.15, and the three-meter dive with a score of 239.25.  She scored a total of 18 points for Emory with the two first-place finishes.

O’Brien recorded three individual first-place finishes and one NCAA ‘B’ cut time during the Eagles’ season-opening meet against UNC Wilmington.  He finished first in the 200-yard breaststroke, recording a ‘B’ cut time of 2:06.71 in the effort.  He went on to finish first in both the 100-yard breaststroke (58.65 seconds) and the 200-yard individual medley (1:55.91).  O’Brien also claimed third place as part of the Eagles’ 200-yard medley relay team (1:53.39).

Koln recorded a qualifying score in the one-meter dive on Saturday, as his score of 295.20 was more than 10 points above the NCAA Division III qualifying score, and was good for a second-place finish at the meet.  He also finished second in the three-meter dive with a score of 257.18.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday, November 3rd, as Emory will swim against Georgia Tech and the University of Georgia, at Georgia Tech, starting at 5:00 PM.
