Two Emory Swimmers Named UAA Athletes of the Week

Emory University senior April Whitley and sophomore Peter O’Brien each earned University Athletic Association (UAA) Athlete of the Week honors for Swimming and Diving, following their record-setting performances at the Miami Invitational.

Whitley set school records in two events, posted six NCAA Division III automatic qualifying times, and two provisional times at the Miami University Invitational.  She broke her own school record in the 100-yard breaststroke with an automatic-qualifying time of 1:02.86 to finish in third place after recording a mark of 1:03.47 in the preliminaries.  In the 200-yard breaststroke, Whitley set another school record, finishing fourth with an ‘A’ cut time of 2:17.82, exceeding the automatic cut at 2:18.31 in the preliminaries.  She also collected automatic qualifying bids as part of two second-place relays, helping the 400-yard medley relay finish in 3:45.98 and the 200-yard medley relay to a 1:43.77 mark.  Whitley rounded out the meet with a pair of ‘B’ cut times and a 12th place final time of 2:07.91 in the 200-yard individual medley.  She helped the Emory women finish second out of eight teams at the meet.

O’Brien set a school record in the 200-yard breaststroke, recorded five NCAA Division III automatic and five provisional qualifying times, and won five events at the meet.  His first-place finish and automatic time of 2:00.26 in the 200-yard breaststroke broke his own school record of 2:00.77 set in the preliminaries earlier in the day.  He also won the 100-yard breaststroke with a ‘B’ cut time of 56.11 seconds.  O’Brien recorded a pair of automatic qualifying times in the 200-yard individual medley, finishing first with a time of 1:51.24 after exceeding the mark in the prelims. He placed second in the 400-yard individual medley with a provisional time of 4:00.12 in the finals, after a mark of 4:00.00 in the preliminaries.  He also swam in a pair of winning relays, recording an ‘A’ cut time of 3:19.92 as part of the 400-yard medley relay team and a provisional time of 1:31.28 in the 200-yard medley.  O’Brien led the Eagles to a first-place finish at the meet, despite facing mostly NCAA Division I competition.

This was the second conference honor this season for both Whitley and O’Brien.

The Eagles will return to action on January 10, 2011, traveling to the University of Tampa for a dual meet.
