Emory Swimming & Diving to Open 2010-11 with its Annual Blue-Gold Meet

The Emory University swimming and diving team will kick off its 2010-11 season on Friday at 4:00 PM with the annual Blue-Gold Intra-Squad Meet at the Woodruff P.E. Center.

The meet will feature only Emory swimmers and divers, as the Eagles' coaching staff, led by 13th-year head coach Jon Howell, will get their first look at their new season's squad in competitive action.

The women's team will be returning to the pool for the first time since winning the NCAA Division III Championship last March.  The squad will feature 26 returning swimmers from last year's team, including 2010 National Champions Anne Culpepper, Claire Pavlak, and Ann Wolber.  All-Americans Jennifer Aronoff, Theresa Gallagher, Leslie Hackler, Liz Horvat, Amy Minowitz, Katie Mroz, Jacqueline Schneider, Whitley Taylor and April Whitley will all be returning for the strong Emory squad as well.

The men's team will be coming off a third-place finish at the NCAA Division III Championships and its 12th-consecutive University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship.  Among the 23 returning athletes from last year's squad will be 2010 all-Americans Mark Bernstein, Justin Leemis, Mackenzie Perry, Matt Spooner and Paul Weinstein, in addition to all-America honorable mentions Bryant Jones and Peter O'Brien.

Both teams will also be welcoming in a wealth of new talent, including 15 freshmen and a sophomore for the women's team, and 10 freshmen and two juniors to the men's team.

Emory's swimmer and divers will be divided into two teams for the meet – a 'Blue' team and a 'Gold' team.  The meet will be scored like a typical collegiate dual meet.

The meet will also be the team's first competitive action at the newly-remodeled Madeleine Jude Brown Aquatic Center.  Among the improvements made during the summer were the replacement of the deck tiles with non-slip tiling, which feature a blue and yellow patterning, a re-grouting and replacement (where necessary) of the pool tiles, new fiberglass for the bulkhead, a new in-deck timing system, improvements to the gutter system, and an in-deck hot tub to accommodate divers.

Results from the Blue-Gold meet will be posted to EmoryAthletics.com following the completion of competition.
