Emory Swimmers Liz Horvat and Amy Minowitz to Receive the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship
Emory University seniors Liz Horvat and
Amy Minowitz have been awarded the prestigious
NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, based on their athletic
accomplishments, success in the classroom and work in the
community. As a result, each will be awarded a $7,500
scholarship, to be used for postgraduate study.
Horvat ended her career with 17 all-America certificates, including
four National Championships during the 2009 season, when she was
named the NCAA Division III Women’s Swimmer of the
Year. Horvat is also a two-time University Athletic
Association (UAA) Swimmer of the Year, and is the Emory varsity
record-holder in three individual events and one relay. As a
psychology major with a minor in sociology, Liz has compiled a 3.26
cumulative grade point average, earning CSCAA Scholar all-America
honors in 2010. In addition, she has spent time volunteering
with the Special Olympics, Emory READs and Wilderness Works, along
with serving on the Inter-Sorority Council and spending time as a
freshman orientation leader.
Minowitz is a three-time all-American during her career, finishing
seventh in the 1,650-yard freestyle at the NCAA Championships in
both 2009 and 2010, and claiming third as part of the 800-yard
freestyle relay in 2008. She has also earned four all-America
honorable mentions during her career. Amy has been named to
the Dean’s List four times during her academic career as a
biology major with a minor in economics, compiling a cumulative
grade point average of 3.865. She has been named a CSCAA
Scholastic all-American on three occasions, and is a member of the
Phi Sigma Biology Honor Society, the Omicron Delta Epsilon Economic
Honor Society, and the Alpha Epsilon Delta Pre-Health Honor
Society. Amy has volunteered with both the Best Buddies
program and the Special Olympics, in addition to helping the campus
‘go green’ as a intern with the Emory Recycles
program.
Both Emory swimmers have also helped the squad to back-to-back NCAA
Division III National Championships in 2010 and 2011.
Emory has now been awarded 70 postgraduate scholarships over the
school's history, and 53 since 2000, more than any other NCAA
institution except Stanford University. Emory's swimming and
diving team has seen 25 of its members win the scholarship over the
past eight years, including 12 winners over the last five
years.
This season's NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipients (29 men and
29 women) represent winter-sports participants from all NCAA
divisions, who will receive one-time, nonrenewable grants of
$7,500.
The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel
academically and athletically and who are in their final year of
intercollegiate athletics competition. The Association awards up to
174 postgraduate scholarships annually, 87 for men and 87 for
women.
The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote
and encourage postgraduate education by rewarding the Association's
most accomplished student-athletes through their participation in
NCAA championship and/or emerging sports. For more information

Inclusion link under the ‘About the NCAA' tab at www.ncaa.org.
