First Round Match: Methodist

Methodist University defeated Agnes Scott College 5-3 in the
opening round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis
Tournament at Emory University in Atlanta, GA.
Methodist took a 2-1 lead after the completion of the doubles
matches. The Monarch’s first doubles pairing of Kaitlin
Flaherty and Katherine Meindl, ranked 14th in the
Atlantic South Region, were the first to finish, defeating Agnes
Scott’s Rachel Storz and Danielle Patton. Methodist
took at 2-0 lead after the third doubles match, with Heather
Brayton and Jennifer Hamel and Heather Brayton defeating Amanda
Chaffin and Nikitris Deloach 9-8, with a 7-4 tiebreaker. The
Scotties would salvage a point with a tiebreaker win of their own,
as Natalie Mayer and Hannah Kraus defeated Rachel Purser and Dana
Powell defeated 9-8 (7-2).
Methodist would extend its lead to 3-1 with a win in the second
singles match by Katherine Meindl, who defeated Natalie Mayer 6-3,
6-0, and would come to within a point of clinching the match after
Kelli Shelton defeated Agnes Scott’s Amanda Chaffin 6-1, 6-0
in the sixth singles match.
Agnes Scott would battle back, getting wins from Shamonique Jones,
6-3, 6-2, over Heather Brayton in the fourth singles match, and
from Rachel Storz, 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 , over Kaitlin Flaherty in the
first singles match. However, Methodist’s Dana Powell
would clinch the team victory with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 win in the fifth
singles match.
The third singles match between Dansielle Patton and Rachel Purser
was left unfinished.
With the victory, Methodist, now 23-2 this season, will advance to
play Emory in the second round of the tournament on Saturday, May
15th at 10:00 AM. Agnes Scott finished its season
with an 11-8 record.
First Round Match: #17 Vassar 5, Transylvania 0
In the second first round match of the day at the NCAA Division
III Regional Tournament at Emory University, 17th-ranked
Vassar College defeated Transylvania University 5-0.
Vassar jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, earning victories in all
three doubles matches. Finishing first was the second doubles
match, where Jennifer Beckerman and Nicole Block of Vassar defeated
Stephanie Townsend and Andrea Mong of Transylvania 8-0. In
the first doubles match, Vassar’s pairing of Nicole Pontee
and Joy Backer, ranked seventh in the Northeast Region, earned a
8-3 victory over Kelsey Fulkerson and Sarah Ridley. Shortly
after the completion of the first doubles match, Vassar’s
third doubles team of Melanie Horn and Natalie Santiago completed
the doubles sweep with an 8-3 win over Kaitlyn Hinzy and Katie
Moore.
Needing to win just two of the singles matches to claim victory,
Vassar got its first singles point from the third singles match,
where Joy Backer earned a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win over Katie
Boone. Nicole Block clinched the team win with a 6-1, 6-0
victory over Andrea Mong in the sixth singles match. The
other four singles contests were left unfinished.
With the win, Vassar improves to 12-3 on the season, and will face
sixth-ranked Washington and Lee University in the second round of
the tournament at 2:00 PM on Saturday in Atlanta, GA.
Transylvania ends its 2010 campaign with a record of 12-3.
Second Round Match: #4 Emory University 5, Methodist University 0

Emory University, seeded fourth in the NCAA Division III
Women’s Tennis Championships, opened its tournament with a
5-0 win over Methodist University, advancing to play in the
regional finals on Sunday at 12:00 PM.
The Eagles took control of the match during doubles play, winning
all three matches to take a 3-0 lead over the Monarchs.
Finishing first was Emory’s third doubles team of
Lindsay Reidenbach and Jordan
Wylie, who picked up a perfect 8-0 win over
Methodist’s Heather Brayton and Jennifer Hamel. The
Eagles’ second doubles pairing of Tshema
Nash and Sabra Rogers, ranked
13th in the Atlantic South Region, was the second group
to finish, winning 8-1 over the Monarchs’ Rachel Purser and
Dana Powell. Emory’s first pairing of Zahra
Dawson and Lorne McManigle, ranked third
in the region, rounded out the doubles-sweep with another 8-1
victory, over regionally 14th-ranked Kaitlin Flaherty
and Katherine Meindl.
In singles play, Nash was the first to finish for the Eagles,
defeating Methodist’s Brayton 6-1, 6-1 in the fourth singles
match. Reidenbach clinched the match for Emory with a perfect
6-0, 6-0 win in the fifth singles match over Dana Powell. The
other four singles matches were left unfinished.
Emory’s singles players combined to lose just seven games
during the match, which lasted just an hour and 35 minutes.
With the win, Emory improved to 19-5 during the season, while
Methodist concluded its year with a 23-3 record.
Emory will play the winner of today’s match between
17th-ranked Vassar College and sixth-ranked Washington
and Lee University in the third round of the tournament at 12:00 PM
on Sunday at the Woodruff Physical Education Center.

The Washington and Lee University Generals, seeded sixth in the
NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Tournament, advanced to the
third round with a 5-0 win over 17th-ranked Vassar
College.
Washington and Lee struck the first blow in the doubles contests,
as the team’s third doubles pairing of Trelsie Sadler and
Blair Brzeski defeated Vassar’s Natalie Santiago and Melanie
Horn 8-0. Also earning a perfect victory for the Generals was
their second doubles pairing of Lauren Lukas and Ann Morris, ranked
11th in the Atlantic South Region, who defeated the
Brewers’ Jennifer Beckerman and Nicole Block.
Washington and Lee’s Lauren Caire and Ellen Yeatman, ranked
second in the Atlantic South Region, completed the doubles sweep
for the Generals, winning a 9-8 (7-4) marathon match against Nicole
Pontee and Joy Backer, ranked seventh in the Northeast Region.
In singles play, Washington got a quick point from regionally
25th-ranked Ann Morris in the fifth singles match, who
won 6-0, 6-2 over Jennifer Ruther. The Generals’ fourth
singles player, Jen Snyder, clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-0
victory. The other four singles matches were left
unfinished.
Washington and Lee improved to 19-5 on the season with the win,
while Vassar ended its season with a 19-3 record.
Washington and Lee will advance to play Emory University in the
third-round match at 12:00 PM on Sunday, the final match of the
tournament at the regional site.
