Emory Women’s Tennis to Play Four in Orlando during Spring Break

The Emory University women's tennis team, ranked second in the nation, will play four matches in as many days in Orlando, Florida, during their spring break trip next week.

The Eagles will begin the week on Sunday, March 7th, facing Grand Valley State University, ranked 33rd in Division II, at 4:00 PM.  On Monday, March 8th, the Eagles will take on the College of New Jersey, ranked 22nd in Division III, at 2:00 PM.  The Eagles will round out the week with a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 10th, taking on 26th-ranked Coe College at 12:30 PM, and UAA-rival University of Rochester at 6:00 PM.

Emory will begin the week ranked second in the nation according to the latest ITA Division III poll.  Emory has an overall record of 8-2 this season, including a 7-0 mark against Division III opponents and a 3-0 record in matches held on a neutral site.

Grand Valley State University stands at 13-5 overall this season, including a 4-1 mark in neutral matches.  In addition to being ranked 33rd among all Division II squads, the Lakers are also ranked third in the Midwest Region.  This will be the first meeting between the two teams.

The College of New Jersey is 6-0 this season, and will be playing its first neutral matches of the season at the round robin next week.  The Lions are ranked seventh in the Northeast region, and feature regionally eighth-ranked singles player Jackie Shtemberg, 18th-ranked singles player Karisse Bendijo, and the second-ranked doubles team of Shtemberg and Felice Trinh.  Emory and New Jersey have met once before, with the Eagles winning the match 7-2 on May 5th, 1998.

Coe College currently stands at 9-1 on the season, including a 1-1 mark in neutral matches.  The Kohawks are ranked ninth in the Division III Central Region, and feature regionally 23rd-ranked singles player Hannah Jensen, and the 12th-ranked doubles team of Andrea and Michelle Schupbach.  This will be the first meeting between the two teams.

Rochester will begin the weekend with a 4-1 record in dual matches this season, and will be playing their first neutral matches of the season this week.  The Yellowjackets are ranked 13th in the Northeast Region, and feature regionally seventh-ranked singles player Lia Weiner, 19th-ranked singles player Frances Tseng, and the 12th-ranked doubles paring in Weiner and Tseng.  Despite both teams competing annually at the UAA Tournament, this will just be the fifth meeting all time between the two squads, with Emory holding a 4-0 record.  The teams' last meeting was in 1999, resulting in a 7-2 Emory win.
