Third-Ranked Womens Tennis to Play Four Matches during the Week
The Emory University women's tennis team will have a busy week
in front of it, playing in four matches, including its first two
home contests of the season, during the upcoming week.
The Eagles will open the week with a match at the University of the
South at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, February 17th, followed
by another road contest at Brenau University at 11:00 AM on
Saturday, February 20th. Emory will then open its
home season on Sunday, February 21st with matches
against Agnes Scott College at 1:00 PM, and Huntingdon College at
4:00 PM.
Emory currently stands at 0-1 on the season after suffering a
7-2 loss to Clayton State University, the 10th-ranked
Division II squad, during their first match of the spring.
Sophomore Zahra Dawson, who was named the UAA
Athlete of the Week for women's tennis, earned a victory in the
second-singles match, while senior co-captain Sara
Vrabec won her sixth-singles contest. The Eagles are
ranked third in the nation and first in the Atlantic South
Region.
The University of the South will enter the match ranked
27th in the nation and sixth in the Atlantic South
Region. The Tigers feature two regionally-ranked singles
players - Jenny Liles (11th) and Michelle Flume
(25th) - and the region's fifth-ranked doubles team of
Liles and Flume. The Eagles are 31-10 in the all time series
against Sewanee, which dates back to the 1977 season. Last
season, the Eagles defeated the University of the South 9-0.
Wednesday's match will be the season-opening contest for the
Tigers.
Brenau University, a NAIA school, currently stands at 1-0 on the
season and will play a match against Columbus State on Wednesday
before facing the Eagles on Saturday. The Tigers feature the
NAIA's 25th-ranked player in Lyn See Choo and the
43rd-ranked player in Kate Mazackova, who are also the
fifth-ranked doubles pair in the NAIA. Last season, the
Eagles defeated the Tigers 5-4 at the Woodruff P.E. Center to
improve to 15-8 all-time against Brenau.
Agnes Scott College will play their season-opening match on
Saturday before facing the Eagles on Sunday. The contest will
be a rematch of last season's NCAA Tournament second-round match,
which the Eagles won 5-0.
Huntingdon College will open up its 2010 spring season earlier in
the day on Sunday, facing Methodist University at the Woodruff P.E.
Center before taking on the Eagles. The Hawks feature singles
player Katie Scott, who is ranked 24th in the Atlantic
South Region. Last year, Emory shut out Huntingdon 9-0 in
Montgomery, AL.
