Top-Seeded Emory Looks to Repeat as ITA Indoor Champions
The third-ranked Emory University women’s tennis team will
be the top seed in the ITA Division III Women’s Team Indoor
Championships, opening up play at 6:00 PM EST on Friday, March
4th against 15th-ranked and eighth-seeded
DePauw University.
The draw at the tournament will feature eight of the top-15 ranked
in the Campbell/ITA Division III College Tennis Rankings.
Gustavus Adolphus College is set to host the third annual ITA
National Division III Women's Team Indoor Championship for the
second time, after DePauw hosted the second annual event last
year. All matches will be played at the Swanson Tennis Center
in St. Peter, MN.
The Eagles won the ITA Indoor Championship last season, defeating
the University of Chicago 6-3 in the title match. In 2009,
the first year of the annual tournament, Emory advanced to the
championship match before losing to Carnegie Mellon University,
6-3.
Emory will enter play this weekend with an overall record of 3-2 on
the season, after winning three-consecutive matches, and is 1-0
this year against NCAA Division III opponents.
DePauw will enter Friday’s match with an overall record of
2-1 this season, with wins over Luther College and Oberlin College,
and a loss to Grand Valley State University.
Other teams competing at the ITA Indoor Championships include
second-seeded and fourth-ranked Chicago, third-seeded and
fifth-ranked Denison University, fourth-seeded and seventh-ranked
Gustavus Adolphus, fifth-seeded and eighth-ranked Carnegie Mellon,
sixth-seeded and 10th-ranked Washington and Lee
University, and seventh-seeded and 13th-ranked Chapman
University.
The second round will continue on Saturday with winners and losers
from Friday playing each other at 2:00 PM and 8:30 AM,
respectively, with the fifth- and seventh-place matches following
Saturday night at 7:30 PM. The championship and third-place
matches will be played Sunday morning at 9:00 AM.
