#3 Emory Women’s Tennis to Face Agnes Scott in Second Round of NCAAs
The third-ranked Emory University women’s tennis team will
begin its quest for the program’s sixth National Championship
on Friday at 2:00 PM CDT, as the Eagles will take on Agnes Scott
College in the second round of the NCAA Division III Championships
in Sewanee, TN.
Agnes Scott defeated Principia College 5-0 in the first round of
the tournament on Thursday to advance to Friday’s second
round match. The Scotties, ranked 20th in the
Atlantic South Region, will enter play on Friday with an overall
record of 14-2 in 2011.
Meanwhile, Emory, the top overall seed in the NCAA Division III
Championships, will begin tournament play with a record of 19-4,
including a 15-1 mark against other Division III teams. The
Eagles feature the region’s top-ranked singles play, freshman
Gabrielle Clark, in addition to third-ranked
sophomore Jordan Wylie, 10th-ranked
senior Lorne McManigle, and 12th-ranked
junior Zahra Dawson. Emory also the
regionally-ranked doubles pairings of Clark and McManigle (fourth)
and Dawson and Wylie (sixth).
This will be the first meeting of the season between the two
teams. The Eagles and Scotties last met on February
21st, 2010, with Emory coming away with a 9-0
victory. In 2009, the teams faced each other in the second
round of the NCAA Tournament, as the Eagles claimed a 5-0 win.
Should the Eagles win, they will advance to the third round match,
against either 13th-ranked Washington University in St.
Louis or the 18th-ranked University of the South.
