Top-Ranked Women’s Tennis to Host Berry, Play at Clayton St. this Week
The Emory University women’s tennis team, which has risen
to the top spot in the latest ITA/Campbell’s NCAA Division
III rankings, will return to action this week at home against Berry
College on Monday, and at Clayton State University on Saturday.
Monday’s match against Berry is slated for a 3:00 PM start at
the Woodruff Physical Education Center. Saturday’s
match at Clayton State (which was originally scheduled to be played
at Emory, but was moved to the Lakers’ campus in Morrow, GA)
will begin at 1:00 PM.
Following the team’s 3-1 performance at the Fab 10
Tournament, which included wins against fifth-ranked Tufts,
10th-ranked Middlebury and 11th-ranked
Gustavus Adolphus and a loss to fourth-ranked Williams, the Eagles
rose from third to first in the D-III rankings. It marked the
first time since March 2007 that Emory has been the top-ranked team
in the Nation.
Emory will begin the week with a 14-3 overall record, including
wins in 14 of its last 15 matches.
Berry, a NCAA Division III provisional member, currently stands at
11-5 on the season. The Lady Vikings are coming off a 9-0 win
over LaGrange College on March 23rd. Emory is 12-2
all time against the Lady Vikings, including a 7-2 win last season
at Berry.
Clayton State will begin the week with a record of 9-5 this season,
but will have matches against Georgia College, Montevallo, and
Brenau before facing the Eagles on Saturday. The Lakers are
currently ranked 12th among NCAA Division II teams, and
have Division II’s 19th and 24th-ranked
singles players, and 10th and 18th-ranked
doubles pairings. The Eagles are 3-4 all time against the
Lakers, after falling 7-2 at Clayton State last season.
