#3 Women’s Tennis Continues Run with 6-0 Win over #10 Gustavus
The third-ranked Emory University women’s tennis team won
its 14th-straight match on Tuesday, defeating
10th-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College 6-0 as part of the
Fab 10 Tournament at the Woodruff P.E. Center.
Emory improved to 14-2 on the season with the win, while Gustavus
dropped to 9-5 with the loss. Of the Eagles 14 victories in a
row, nine have come against ranked NCAA Division III opponents,
including each of the last five Emory wins. The Gusties
marked the sixth team ranked in the top-10 that Emory has defeated
this year.
For the ninth time this season, Emory won all three doubles matches
to take a 3-0 lead into singles play. Freshman
Gabrielle Clark and senior Lorne
McManigle defeated the fourth-ranked doubles team in the
Central Region, Sam Frank and Megan Gaard, 8-2 in the first doubles
match. Playing in the second match together for the first
time this season, freshmen Malavika Padmanabhan
and Brenna Kelly improved to 12-1 in doubles
action with an 8-4 win over Alex Erickson and Marianne Barau.
In the third doubles match, junior Zahra Dawson
and freshman Taylor Brandt played together for the
first time in a match this season, but took little time to get
familiar with each other, as the duo defeated Megan Born and Mary
Roop 8-6, capping off the doubles sweep for the Eagles.
Emory would add singles wins from Clark over Frank (7-5, 6-3) in
the first singles match, McManigle over Gaard (6-2, 6-0) in the
second singles match, and Padmanabhan over Erickson (6-4, 6-3) in
the fourth singles match. After the match was moved inside in
the middle of singles play, the last three singles contests were
left unfinished. However, Dawson led 6-2, 4-3 in the third
contest, senior Laura Callava led 6-3, 2-0 in the
fifth match, and Brandt was up 6-2, 1-0 in the sixth.
The shutout was the third of the season for the Eagles.
Emory will now prepare for a key matchup on Thursday, as the Eagles
will wrap up the Fab 10 Tournament against second-ranked Williams
College, a rematch of last year’s NCAA Division III
Championship match, which was won 5-0 by the Ephs. The match
is slated for a 2:00 PM start.
