Eagles Open Play at USTA/ITA Regional Championships

The Emory University Women's Tennis Team got off to a strong start to its 2013-14 campaign, as every Eagles' singles player and doubles team advanced through the first two rounds of the USTA/ITA South Regional Championship in Sewanee, TN on Friday.

The Eagles were dominant in singles matches on Friday, with each of Emory's 11 competitors advancing to the round of 16, and going a combined 16-0 in singles play.  Top-seeded Beatrice Rosen failed to drop a game in her season debut, besting Covenant's Sarah Carter 6-0, 6-0 in the second round after a first-round bye.  On the other side of the draw, second-seeded freshman Michelle Satterfield was perfect as well, winning 6-0, 6-0 over Centre's Molly McElvogue. 

Emory's other two seeded players advanced as well after first-round byes, as fifth-seeded sophomore Madison Gordon defeated Rhodes' Emily Rizer 6-3, 6-1, and fifth-seeded freshman Melissa Goodman earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Sewanee's Elizabeth Lucas.  Other Eagles advancing after first round byes included freshman Bruna Correa (6-0, 6-4 over Rhodes' Morgan Wilkins) and freshman Michelle DeMeo (6-7, 6-1, 6-2 over Agnes Scott's Alex Cagle).

Five addition Emory singles players moved on in the tournament after winning both first and second round matches.  Sophomore Stephanie Loutsenko bested Meredith's Mary Lawrence Newton 6-3, 6-0 in the first round, and Rhodes' Maggie Donoghue 6-3, 6-1 in the second.  Senior Brenna Kelly dropped just two games during the day, winning 6-2, 6-0 over Sewanee's Kate Johnston and 6-0, 6-0 over Berry's Emma O'Reilly.  Junior Catharine Harris was perfect through her two matches, earning 6-0, 6-0 wins against Mississippi's Laura Van Horn in the first round and Rhodes' Krystal Skmetta in the second.  In her collegiate debut, freshman Katarina Su claimed a 6-0, 6-0 win over Centre's Yixin Liu and followed with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Meredith's Puja Patel.  Rounding out Emory's singles performers was junior Danielle Truitt, who defeated Berry's Mary Cerny 6-1, 6-1 in the first round and Millsaps' Callie Creekmore 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 in the second round.

Singles action will continue on Saturday, with the round of 16 and the quarterfinals.  Emory's scheduled singles matches in the round of 16 include Rosen against Mississippi's Courtney Shrock, with the winner taking on the victor of Loutsenko against Centre's Kathryn Hays, Kelly matching up against third-seeded Deena Li Kam Wa of Millsaps, with the winner facing the advancing player from the matchup of Goodman and Harris, Su against Gordon, with the winner facing the winner of the round of 16 match between Truitt and Sewanee's fourth-seeded Lindsay Liles, and DeMeo against Sewanee's Annie Veron, with the winner facing the winner of Correa and Satterfield in the quarterfinals.

The Eagles were solid throughout doubles play as well, with each of their six doubles teams reaching the quarterfinals.  The top-seeded pairing of Kelly and Goodman advanced to the quarterfinals with an 8-0 win over Sewanee's Lucas and Mariah Smith after a first-round bye, while the second-seeded duo of junior Rebecca Siegler and Satterfield earned an 8-3 win over Centre's Courtney Delong and Kate Tomey in the second round.    Also receiving first-round byes were Gordon and Su, the third-seeded pair, who earned an 8-1 win over Oglethorpe's Jahuan Freeman-Clark and Katherine Walker, and Correa and Truitt besting Berry's Mary Cerney and Heidi Seabaugh 8-2.

In first round action, DeMeo and Harris bested Rhodes' Anna Volkov and Morgan Wilkins 8-1, and followed with an 8-2 win over Millsaps' Li Jam Wa and Creekmore.  Rosen and Loutsenko claimed a pair of doubles victories as well, beating Rhodes' Skmetta and Elle Prewitt 8-2, and Rhodes' Rizer and Amelia McIsaac 8-2.

Saturday's doubles quarterfinal matches will pit Kelly and Goodman against Agnes Scott's Alex Cadle and Mariel Herrera, with the winner facing the victor of DeMeo and Harris against Sewanee's Liles and Veron.  The other side of the draw will feature two all-Emory matchups, with Loutsenko and Rosen taking on Gordon and Su, and Correa and Truitt matching up against Siegler and Satterfield.
