No. 3 Eagles Capture Emory Tournament Volleyball Crown
The No. 3-ranked Emory University volleyball team captured the
Emory Tournament championship on Saturday after battling its way to
a pair of victories. The Eagles opened the day with a 3-1 triumph
(25-17, 19-25, 25-15, 25-19) against Lynchburg College before
recording a 3-0 decision (25-14, 25-21, 25-19) over Shorter
College. The two victories gave Emory a 4-0 mark on the weekend and
upped its overall record to 15-2 on the year.
Emory spread out its offensive attack in the Lynchburg contest with
senior Alysee Meyer and freshman Alex Duhl each notching nine kills
apiece. Duhl made the most of her hitting opportunities,
registering a team-best 53.3 attack percentage (9-1-15) and also
made her presence felt at the net with eight block
assists. Junior Amelia McCall contributed eight
terminations in the victory. The Eagles hit 21.0 percent
(45-16-138) in the match compared to Lynchburg's .090 percent
(48-34-156). Lynchburg held a 68-57 edge in digs while Emory
finished with an 11-5 margin in total blocks.
Emory was considerably more efficient in its hitting in the Shorter
bout, compiling a 33.3 attack percentage (41-12-87) while holding
its opponent to 18.8 percent (35-17-96). Sophomore Jessica
McAlvany was a dominant force for Emory, knocking down 12 kills and
finishing with a 70.6 attack percentage (12-0-17), a season high
for an Emory player this season. Duhl and McCall each chipped
in eight terminations with Duhl adding four block
assists.
Emory returns to action next Saturday and Sunday (Oct. 3-4) when it
competes at the University Athletic Association Round Robin I in
Rochester, NY.
