The Emory University volleyball team split a pair of Monday
evening matches against NCAA Division II competition, coming out on
the short end of a 3-0 decision to the University of Puerto Rico
Rio Piedras (22-25, 26-28, 9-25) before bouncing back to claim a
3-1 win over host North Alabama (25-22, 18-25, 28-26, 25-22). The
split leaves Emory's record at 21-4.
Emory spread out its offense against the Lions of UNA with four
players registering double figures in kills led by sophomore
Jessica McAlvany's 13 terminations. Freshman Alex Duhl
knocked down 12 kills and hit 50 percent (12-1-22). Senior
Alysse Meyer and junior Amelia McCall rounded out the quartet with
11 put-aways apiece. North Alabama enjoyed an edge in hitting
percentage (22.8 percent vs. 18.4 percent) and finished with a slim
59-55 margin in digs. Sophomore Brannan O'Neill led of trio
of Eagles who chalked up double figures with 14 digs while McAlvany
added 11. Sophomore Natalie Schonefeld dished out 47
assists.
In the Puerto Rico contest, the Eagles finished with an 18.3
hitting percentage (38-18-109) compared to their opponent's mark of
31.9 percent (42-10-103). Senior Alysse Meyer led the team
with 10 kills and hit 50.0 percent in the contest (10-1-18)
freshman Alex Duhl chipped in nine put-aways en route to hitting
57.1 percent (9-1-14). Sophomore Brannan O'Neill recorded a
team-high 10 digs.
Emory returns to action on Saturday when it competes in the
University Athletic Association Round Robin II in New York.
