Emory Volleyball Hosts North Alabama
MATCH FACTS - After winning three of four
matches at the Washington & Lee Tournament last weekend, the
Emory volleyball team returns to action on Tuesday (Sept 15)
evening when it entertains Division II member North Alabama.
Match time at the Woodruff PE Center is slated for 6:00 p.m.
THE COACHES - Emory Head Coach Jenny
McDowell (Georgia, '89) is in her 14th year at the helm of
the Eagles' program. During her stint at Emory, McDowell has
posted a school and career won-lost ledger of 414-113. She
has 11 campaigns of 30 or more wins and has directed the program to
14 consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament. She guided Emory
to its first-ever national title in 2008 and was named as the AVCA
National Coach of the Year.
North Alabama is led by Stephanie Radecki
(Edinboro University, ‘98) who is in her sixth year at the
helm of the Lions' program. During her tenure at UNA, she has
compiled a school record of 142-50. She has been named the AVCA
Regional Coach of the Year on two occasions and recorded a 24-11
record in 2008, the program's 15th consecutive winning
season. In seven campaigns as a head coach, which includes a
one-year stint at St. Leo, Radecki has a career slate of
153-69.
RECORDS - Emory heads into Tuesday's contest with
an 8-1 mark after its performance at the Washington & Lee
Tournament. The Eagles opened play on Friday with a 3-1
triumph over Christopher Newport before closing out the day with a
3-0 triumph over Southern Virginia. On Saturday, No. 2-ranked
Juniata saddled Emory with its first setback of the year with a 3-1
decision over the defending D-III national champs. Emory then
regrouped and closed out the weekend with a 3-0 verdict over host
Washington and Lee.
North Alabama, a member of the 14-team Gulf South Conference, comes
to town with a won-lost ledger of 3-8. UNA came out on the
short end in two of three matches at the West Florida Regional
Crossover last weekend, defeating Nova Southeastern, 3-0, while
dropping matches to Florida Southern and Saint Leo.
SERIES RECORDS - Emory and North Alabama have met
on three occasions with the Lions capturing two of the
encounters. The two teams met last year in Florence with UNA
coming away with a 3-1 decision.
EAGLES EARN W&L TOURNAMENT HONORS -
Senior Alysse Meyer and sophomore Jessica
McAlvany were the Emory representatives on the
Washington & Lee All-Tournament Team. McAlvany averaged a
team-high 3.08 kills per set and registered a 43.8 hitting
percentage (40-8-73) while Meyer came through with a 2.69 kills per
set effort with a 30.2 hitting percentage (35-9-86).
EMORY TOUGH AT THE WOODPEC - Emory has proved to
be a tough opponent on its home court at the Woodruff PE
Center. Since 1992, the Eagles have compiled an overall
record of 239-44, good for an 84.4 winning percentage. Since
the 2004 campaign, Coach McDowell has seen her club fashion a
classy 79-12 slate (.868). Last season, Emory finished with a
mark of 11-1 in home matches.
NUMBERS TO WATCH - McAlvany has double-figure
kills in six matches and leads the squad with a 3.46 kills
per set average ... Alysse Meyer stands third on the club in kills
(2.87 k/s) while posting a 39.4 hitting percentage ... Freshman
Breanah Bourque recorded a season-high 11 kills
against Southern Virginia, her second outing of double figures in
that category this season ... Sophomore Alexandra
Wright tied her career high with nine blocks (2-7) vs.
Southern Virginia ... Meyer is 25 kills from tying Courtney Rose
(2003-07) for fifth place on the school's all-time list ...
Sophomore setter Natalie Schonefeld holds down the
No. 6 position on the Eagles' all-time chart with 1,745 assists ...
Schonefeld doled out 40 assists (tying her second-highest mark this
season) and racked up a season-best 13 digs in the Juniata match
... Senior Vista Murphy's season-best 16 digs
against Christopher Newport tied her second-highest career
mark.
ON THE HORIZON - Following Tuesday's match-up
against North Alabama, the Eagles will host the Emory Quadrangle on
Friday and Saturday (Sept. 18-19). Emory will play its two
matches of the Quadrangle on Friday when it battles LaGrange
College (4:30 p.m.) and Maryville College (7:00 p.m.).
On Saturday, there are two matches slated for 11:00 a.m. -
Maryville vs. Oglethorpe and LaGrange vs. Gadsden State Community
Collee - and a pair for 1:00 p.m. Maryville vs. Gadsden and
Oglethorpe vs. LaGrange.
EAGLES TRIO TO SERVE AS CAPTAINS - Serving as
captains for the 2009 Eagles are senior Vista
Murphy (Laguna Beach, CA), Natalie
Schonefeld and junior Amelia McCall
(Montgomery, AL).
