Emory Volleyball Edges USC-Aiken In Five-Set Thriller
Stats
The Emory volleyball team notched its seventh straight win Thursday
evening as it topped Division II foe USC-Aiken in five-set
battle. The Eagles upped their overall record to 17-2
following a 25-18, 26-28, 25-18, 26-28, 15-6 decision over the
Pacers who slipped to 7-11 with the loss.
Senior Amelia McCall keyed the win with a career-high tying 18
kills along with a personal best of 21 digs, her sixth straight
double-double and seventh of the year. McCall was a
one-person wrecking crew in the decisive fifth set as she racked up
seven of the team’s nine terminations while helping the team
to a 50.0 hitting percentage (9-0—18).
After the Pacers tied the match in the fourth set, the Eagles
wasted little time in setting the tone for the fifth game as they
bolted out to a 9-0 lead. Emory eventually built a 13-2
cushion before closing the match appropriately enough on the
strength of a McCall attack.
Sophomore Breanah Bourque was second high on the squad with 15
put-aways while contributing four total blocks (2-2). Juniors
Jessica McAlvany and Ali Wright each chipped in 12 kills with
McAlvany being credited with 11 digs. Junior setter Natalie
Schonefeld enjoyed a productive night, tying her season highs with
53 assists and 16 digs. Freshman Sarah Taub was second high
on the club with 17 digs while classmate Molly Landers added 14
along with a pair of service aces.
Emory, ranked No. 3 among Division III programs, finished the night
with 98 digs, tying the ninth-highest match total in school
history.
Emory returns to action on Friday, Oct. 8, with a home match vs.
Lee University starting at 7:00 p.m.
