No. 3 Emory Volleyball Claims Maryville Tournament Crown

The No. 3-ranked Emory University volleyball team captured first place at the Maryville College Tournament on Sunday following a pair of victories on the final day of action.  The Eagles had to rally for a 3-2 triumph against Mount St. Joseph (23-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-20, 15-14) before notching a decisive 3-0 decision over host Maryville (25-18, 25-14, 25-14).  Emory battled to a 4-0 record over the weekend and upped its overall slate to 5-0 on the season.

Senior Amelia McCall and junior Jessica McAlvany led the Eagles’ offensive effort in the Mount St. Joseph affair, blasting away for 19 and 18 kills, respectively.  Junior Natalie Schonefeld doled out 51 assists and totaled 11 digs to aid in the win while freshman Sarah Taub was credited with 18 digs.

Sophomore Breanah Bourque led the team’s way against the Scots of Maryville, hitting a blazing 57.1 percent with 13 terminations and just one error in 21 attempts.  McCall racked up a dozen successful attacks and finished with a 37.0 hitting percentage (12-2—27), and also topped the squad with 13 digs, while McAlvany rounded out the double-digit producers in that category with 11 kills.

McCall was named the MVP of the Tournament while Bourque earned all-tournament recognition.

Emory returns to action on Tuesday (Sept. 7) when it plays at the University of West Georgia.
